From the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom, if one were to speak of the meaning of the Great Vehicle by means of wonders and the like, it would be immeasurable. However, if those immeasurable things were summarized, then within the eight aspects of the Dharma, the meaning of the Great Vehicle is completely contained. Therefore, these eight aspects of the Dharma are called the Great Vehicle. Furthermore, the meaning of summarizing these eight aspects of the Dharma is that a Bodhisattva abiding in the lineage, having generated the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment, and in the stage of application, having accomplished the six perfections of the Bodhisattva's conduct, and thereafter having meditated on the ten stages in sequence and manifested the Buddha's stage, these are called the Great Vehicle. Regarding "lineage," the meaning of lineage, seed, and having the capacity are the same. In essence, from generosity to the perfection of wisdom, having the seed of the six perfections is called lineage. This shows the meaning of "abiding in the lineage," which is the first aspect of the Dharma. Regarding "devotion to the Dharma," since one has the lineage of the Great Vehicle, having single-mindedly faith in the profound and vast Dharma is called devotion to the Dharma, which is the second aspect of the Dharma. Regarding "thus generating the mind," the Bodhisattva also has the lineage, and also becomes devoted to the profound and vast Dharma, therefore, thereafter, wishing to benefit myself and all sentient beings, praying to attain unsurpassed enlightenment is called generating the mind, which is the third aspect of the Dharma. Up to this point, the meaning of abiding in the lineage and generating the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment has been spoken. Regarding "accomplishing generosity and so forth," having generated the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment, in the stage of application, accomplishing the six perfections from the perfection of generosity to the perfection of wisdom is the fourth aspect of the Dharma. Therefore, this shows the meaning of generating the mind of enlightenment and accomplishing the six perfections in the stage of application. Regarding "entering the faultless," being attached to the grasped and the grasper is a fault. In the first stage, regarding the grasped and the grasper,

Because attachment is abandoned, the six perfections are practiced in the stage of aspiring conduct, therefore the first ground is attained, so it is called immaculate. This is the five dharmas. Sentient beings are those who ripen, etc. From the second ground onwards, up to the seventh ground, with the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment and the perfections, those sentient beings who do not have faith in the teachings are made to have faith in the teachings. Those who have faith in the teachings are placed in virtue and made to fully ripen, this is the six dharmas. The field is also completely purified, and there is no abiding nirvana, etc. From the irreversible ground, the eighth, ninth, and tenth grounds, the Buddha field is completely purified and one abides in the path of non-abiding nirvana, this is the seven dharmas. Purifying the Buddha field causes the container world to appear in colors such as crystal and gold. The path of non-abiding nirvana is wisdom and compassion, if compassion does not completely abandon samsara, one will not abide in the direction of mere nirvana. Although Bodhisattvas abide in samsara for the benefit of sentient beings, by the power of wisdom, they are not defiled by the faults of samsara, so they do not abide in samsara. Also completely shows the supreme enlightenment, etc. From the eleventh ground, because the Buddha has attained the three bodies, it is called enlightenment. Starting from enlightenment, showing entering the mother's womb, being born from the womb, being born from the palace and showing renunciation, etc., then showing the manifestation of enlightenment, turning the wheel of dharma, up to nirvana, this is the eighth dharma. Therefore,

That has been explained up to this point. Now, starting from the classification of Bodhisattvas, the qualities of praise will be shown. Among them, starting from the stage of aspiring conduct, if the ten stages are divided, how many Bodhisattvas are there? And what are the characteristics of the Bodhisattvas who dwell on these stages? This is what is to be explained as the classification of Bodhisattvas. This is explained in ten verses. These five Bodhisattvas should be known to pervade all the stages. This means that on top of the ten stages, the stage of aspiring conduct is shown, and on these eleven stages, it should be known that there are five types of Bodhisattvas. One is endowed with aspiration. This is to show what these five types of Bodhisattvas are. Among them, one refers to the Bodhisattva who dwells on the four stages of aspiring conduct, and the Bodhisattva who dwells on the four stages of aspiring conduct is called the Bodhisattva endowed with aspiration. Why is it called endowed with aspiration? Because at this time, the nature of the Dharma realm's all-pervading activity has not been directly realized, but only has faith and trust in the nature of the Dharma realm's all-pervading activity. The other is pure with superior intention. In this sentence, the other means the second Bodhisattva. It refers to the Bodhisattva who dwells on the first stage, who is called the Bodhisattva pure with superior intention. Why is it called pure with superior intention? Because at this time, the nature of the Dharma realm's all-pervading activity has been realized, and one has a mind that is complete with the benefit of oneself and others, which is called superior. Because the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and the obscurations of knowledge have been abandoned, it is called pure. With characteristics, the Bodhisattva who dwells from the second stage upwards to the sixth stage downwards is called the Bodhisattva with characteristics. Why is it called with characteristics? Because on the second stage, one will distinguish and say, "This is the Hearer Vehicle, this is the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, this is the Great Vehicle," thus making various distinctions of the vehicles, and therefore it is with characteristics.
