Summarized into two aspects: the greatness of cause and the greatness of effect. The objects are great, and the two accomplishments are likewise. The two wisdoms are diligent in effort, skillful in means, truly attain greatness, and the activity of the Buddhas is great. Because they possess these greatnesses, it is called the Great Vehicle. It is called the Great Vehicle because it possesses seven greatnesses. The seven greatnesses are: the greatness of the object, the greatness of the two accomplishments, the greatness of the two wisdoms, the greatness of diligent effort, the greatness of skillful means, the greatness of true attainment, and the greatness of the Buddha's activity. The greatness of the object is because it possesses vast sutras and so forth. The Hearers only focus on the Three Baskets, but the Bodhisattvas focus on the profound and vast sutras, such as the Hundred Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, and countless Hundred Thousand Verse Sutras, therefore the object is great. The greatness of accomplishment is that there are two accomplishments: one's own benefit and the benefit of others. The Hearers only accomplish their own benefit, but the Bodhisattvas accomplish both their own and others' benefit, therefore the accomplishment is great. The greatness of wisdom is that there are two greatnesses: the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, at the time of realization. The time of realization refers to the first ground. At the time of the first ground, one realizes both the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, therefore it is called great wisdom. The grounds of the Hearers, at the time of attaining entry into the Path of Seeing, do not realize the selflessness of persons, therefore it is not called great wisdom. The greatness of diligence is because one constantly and respectfully practices for three countless eons. The Hearers exert effort for about three or seven lifetimes, but the Bodhisattvas exert effort for nearly three countless eons, therefore the diligent effort is great. The greatness of skillful means is that one does not abandon samsara without afflictions. The Hearers, in birth and old age,

Because one sees suffering such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, and regards nirvana as the nature of peace. Abandoning samsara, and because one thinks of directly realizing nirvana, it is not called a great method. Bodhisattvas, endowed with wisdom and compassion, do not completely abandon samsara due to compassion, and with wisdom, they abide in samsara but are not defiled by the afflictions of samsara. For example, just as a lotus grows from mud but is not defiled by the faults of mud, they abide, so it is called skillful means. The greatness of the cause has been shown up to this point. The great attainment of truth is strength, fearlessness, and so forth. The noble Shravakas only attain the result of Arhat, the eighteen elements, the elements of overcoming, and only about six kinds of clairvoyance. But Bodhisattvas ultimately attain strength, fearlessness, non-mixture, and so on, and attain immeasurable qualities, so it is called great. The great activity of the Buddha is to show manifest enlightenment and true nirvana. For the Shravakas, having attained the fruit of Arhat and attained nirvana, they do not manifest complete enlightenment, nor do they turn the wheel of Dharma, and so on. But Bodhisattvas, even after becoming fully enlightened, in order to liberate sentient beings, from dwelling in the Akanishta palace, to descending into the womb, to manifesting enlightenment, and so on, until complete nirvana, they perform the activity of teaching the Dharma, so it is called great activity. These two aspects show the greatness of the result. Because the Great Vehicle encompasses everything, these two verses of distinction have been spoken. Those who possess the great nature of the Great Vehicle in this way do not rely on the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha vehicles to arise in the state of nirvana, but it is by the great nature of the Great Vehicle itself that they arise in the state of non-abiding nirvana. Therefore, under the greatness of the Great Vehicle's nature, the chapter on the Great Vehicle's summary is explained. The so-called Great Vehicle refers to
