Just as parents and others help their children and others, Bodhisattvas also help sentient beings, which has been explained. Regarding the phrase "also act as a vessel," for sentient beings, due to the lack of food and clothing, etc., they are unable to perform virtuous deeds such as listening and contemplating, which is called not being a vessel. In this regard, Bodhisattvas give material possessions to those sentient beings who are unable to practice virtue due to the lack of food, clothing, and other necessities, freeing them from poverty and busyness, and allowing them to perform virtuous deeds, which is called acting as a vessel. Giving in this way provides help. Similarly, regarding the phrase "establish in morality," just as Bodhisattvas themselves abide in the morality of the Bodhisattva vows, they also establish other sentient beings in morality. Morality in this way provides help. Regarding the phrase "patience towards harm," when other sentient beings strike with their bodies, etc., or speak harsh words, but do not retaliate with body or speech, this is called patience towards harm. Patience in this way provides help. Regarding the phrase "going for the benefit," going for the benefit means accomplishing what sentient beings should do. What sentient beings should do is to go to distant places and places of suffering to help, and to provide help. This is called going for the benefit. Diligence in this way provides help. Regarding the phrase "also introduce to the teachings," those who possess meditation attain the power of miraculous abilities. Therefore, by showing miraculous abilities such as burning and emitting flames through meditation, sentient beings generate faith and are allowed to take refuge, etc. This is called introducing to the teachings. Meditation in this way provides help. Regarding the phrase "also completely eliminate doubts," sentient beings do not understand the Dharma of the three vehicles, and they doubt whether these Dharmas exist or not, which is called doubt. For them, the nature of the three vehicles is explained without inversion, enabling them to gain understanding and eliminating

Having done so is to correctly dispel doubt, which is beneficial through wisdom. Wise people desire to benefit sentient beings in this way. It is said that, as mentioned above, accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings through the six perfections is called benefiting from the perfections. Thus, these two verses show that benefiting is done through the six perfections. The remaining verses show benefiting like a mother and so on, which is called this. From here, these four verses show that just as a mother benefits her son, a father benefits his son, relatives benefit relatives, friends benefit friends, servants benefit their masters, teachers benefit students, and preceptors benefit students, so too, Bodhisattvas benefit sentient beings. With five actions, the prince of sentient beings is like a mother. It is said that just as a mother benefits her son with five kinds of actions, so too, Bodhisattvas benefit sentient beings with five kinds of actions. Therefore, Bodhisattvas are like the mothers of all sentient beings. So, what are the five actions by which a mother benefits her son? One is holding the place of birth, two is causing birth, three is harmonizing, nourishing, and greatly increasing, four is protecting from evil, and five is also teaching speech. With the same thought, sentient beings are always held in the same way. It is said that just as a mother is unhappy until her son is born, so too, like holding a son in the womb, Bodhisattvas, with the thought of great compassion, do not abandon a single suffering sentient being. Like holding, with that compassionate mind, they also do not abandon all suffering sentient beings, and they hold them until the end of samsara. Therefore, Bodhisattvas are like mothers. So, Bodhisattvas are like mothers. Great compassion is like the mother of a mother. Birth in the land of the noble ones, etc. It is said that in the land of practice with faith, surpassing the supreme of worldly dharmas

also attained the fruits of entering the stream, once returning, not returning, the Arhat, and also entering into cessation, these are the realms of the noble ones. In the manner of Bodhisattvas, surpassing the supreme worldly dharma, from the first ground up to but below the Buddha ground are called the realms of the noble ones. Just as a mother delivers a child from her womb without dying and without harm, so too, Bodhisattvas place and nurture beings in those realms of the noble ones, thus they are like mothers. 'Also increasing virtue.' This means that just as a mother, after giving birth to a child, nurses it, feeds it with food, washes it with water, and anoints it with butter, etc., thus causing the child's body to grow, so too, Bodhisattvas cause all worldly and transworldly virtues to increase and arise in beings, thus they are like mothers. Among these, worldly virtue is the practice of the six perfections during the time of ordinary beings. Transworldly virtue is the practice of the six perfections and the accomplishment of the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment from the first ground upwards. 'Completely guarding against misdeeds.' This means that just as a mother guards her child from falling into cliffs and ravines, etc., so too, Bodhisattvas guard and prevent beings from committing misdeeds of body, speech, and mind that would cause them to fall into the three lower realms, thus they are like mothers. 'Hearing and causing to know.' This means that just as a mother teaches her child worldly names, words, symbols, and terms, making them clever and learned, so too, Bodhisattvas, after hearing the sacred dharma from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, show and teach beings how to listen to the dharma, thus they are like mothers. 'With five actions, the prince of beings is like a father.' This means that just as a father benefits his child with five kinds of actions, so too, Bodhisattvas with five kinds of actions
