Regarding how to view, it is because sentient beings have been accustomed to and familiar with it since beginningless samsara, so it cannot be said that it is taught in order to make them accustomed to it. Furthermore, if it is said that it is taught in order to attain liberation by seeing the "self," then, if those who assert the existence of a "person" say this: Sentient beings have become accustomed to clinging to the "self," and even though they may understand the concept of "self" merely through name, sentient beings cannot attain liberation because they have not seen the characteristics of the "self" that are the size of a thumb or a mustard seed. In order to enable sentient beings to attain liberation and nirvana by seeing the "self" that is the size of a thumb or a mustard seed, the Blessed One taught the "person," this is also unreasonable. In order to illustrate this unreasonableness, it is said in this way. If it were not so, then just as it is said, "Without effort, all attain liberation," if clinging to the "self" could lead to liberation, then even ordinary people who have not seen the Four Noble Truths also have attachment to the "self." If this were the case, then in order to see the truth, without the effort of listening, contemplating, meditating, etc., all sentient beings would attain the fault of attaining liberation and nirvana. Or, liberation would also become meaningless, if one could attain liberation by seeing the "self," then, clinging to the "self" itself is bondage. Because one is bound by it, one will not attain liberation, therefore, it is also meaningless for the Blessed One to teach the "person" in order to liberate sentient beings. In order to clarify this point, one first clings to "self" and "no-self," and at the time of realizing the truth, one clings to "there is a self," and so on. Just like this, seeing "there is a self" is the same as seeing the truth. In the past, when one had not practiced, one did not see "there is a self" in the dharma of "there is a self," because one saw "no-self," one could attain liberation, but after practicing, one would instead become "there is a self," and attain liberation and nirvana, that is the meaning. Just as one did not previously consider suffering to be suffering, but later considered suffering to be suffering, for example, just like before one had not listened, contemplated, and meditated, etc.

If it is said that sentient beings are not liberated because they have not attained the four truths such as suffering, and that they are liberated after seeing the four truths such as suffering, just as sentient beings previously did not see the self in the Dharma that has a self, so sentient beings were not liberated, but later, through the power of cultivation, they later saw the self, and then they will be liberated, it is unreasonable to say so. In order to show this, it is said that as before, so also later will be liberated. If it is said that seeing the self can lead to liberation, then previously sentient beings had the view of self, and therefore generated afflictions such as greed, and because they were bound by it, they were not liberated. Similarly, if they cultivated and saw the self, all afflictions would arise from this view of self. For those things that are in harmony with the self, greed arises. For those things that are not in harmony with the self, hatred arises. If afflictions arise in this way, they will be bound by afflictions and will never be liberated. Therefore, it is contradictory to say that liberation can be achieved from the view of self. If the view of self exists, then those faults will arise. The existence of the view of self will lead to the emergence of the faults mentioned above, which is a summary statement. Now, starting from shame, up to the explanation of the absence of self in people, in order to briefly show the functions of the various aspects of the path to enlightenment, it is said: Thus, these qualities, the Bodhisattva always possesses, does not abandon his own benefit, and also accomplishes the benefit of others. This is to say that, as mentioned above, the Bodhisattva, possessing qualities such as shame and the Dharma, can do two things. The two things are not abandoning one's own benefit and also accomplishing the benefit of others. Among them, one's own benefit is the nature of complete abandonment and complete wisdom. These two abandonments are the abandonment of afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations. Wisdom is understanding the absence of self in people and understanding the absence of self in phenomena. Having obtained these, one will never regress.
