"Karma also exists, and maturation also exists," which means that karma exists, which is the performance of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Maturation exists, which means that there is the experience of happiness and suffering as a result. "Apart from the designation of Dharma," which means that from ignorance as the condition for action, to old age and death as the condition for birth, the arising in cyclic existence through the twelve links of dependent origination is called the designation of Dharma. Apart from such a way of arising, there are no aggregates that abandon this aggregate and take another. Thus it was taught. "Grasping at self and grasping at life," which means that if one asserts that the person exists substantially, then one will grasp at the aggregates that are without self and without what belongs to self as self and as life. This is one fault. "No different from the tirthikas," which means that just as the tirthikas also believe in the existence of a self and a person, this belief in the substantial existence of a person is no different from the tirthikas in grasping at a person, because of grasping at a self and a person. Thus, this is the second fault. "Entering a wrong path," which means that the path of nirvana and liberation is to meditate on all conditioned phenomena as impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self. If this person who grasps at a person looks at self and person, then he has entered a wrong path, which means that he has entered the path of birth in cyclic existence and the lower realms. This is the meaning. This is the third fault. "His mind does not enter into emptiness," which means that emptiness is the Dharma of no self and no what belongs to self. Because of grasping at a person as substantially existent, his mind does not enter into emptiness. In order to show that it does not enter, it is said, "No faith, no abiding, no inclination," which means that at the time of listening, because there is no faith, there is no faith. At the time of thinking, because realization does not arise, it is the fifth aspect. Thus, because there is no arising between the words of the scriptures and the reasoning, there is no inclination. This is the fourth fault. "His noble Dharma will not be completely purified," which means that "his" refers to the grasping at a person who says that the person exists substantially. Noble Dharma is the path of seeing and the path of cultiva

One should practice on the path of cultivation, relying on the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. Through seeing and cultivation, one cannot directly attain liberation by abandoning afflictions, thus the noble Dharma will not become completely purified. This is the meaning. This is the fifth fault. Thus, even if the words of the scriptures are combined with reasoning, it cannot be proven that the person is substantially existent. The Blessed One's words such as "this and that" are the words of those who assert the existence of a person, refuting the opponent. For example, the Blessed One has taught many kinds of persons in those sutras, such as the person who knows all, the person who knows, the person who carries the burden, the person who follows faith, and the person who follows the Dharma. If there were no person, then why did the Blessed One teach and speak of so many categories of persons? If the person were not substantially existent, then the Blessed One would not teach the categories of persons. Because the Blessed One has taught and spoken, therefore, according to the scriptures, the person is substantially existent, they argue. To such an argument, the Blessed One's words are not because the person is substantially existent, but because the term "person" is designated in order to refer to the defiled and purified dharmas, therefore the name "person" is designated. To show this, the following verse is stated: Defilement and purification, place and cessation are different, entry and continuity are also different, the person clearly shows them. This verse is stated to show that if the name and designation of "person" are not established, then the differences of defilement, the differences of purification, the differences of place, the differences of cessation, the differences of entry, and the differences of continuity cannot be shown. These differences are also shown through the name designated as "person". Although the person is not substantially existent, the person is still designated. Therefore, if one is associated with defiled dharmas, then at the time of defilement, one is called a person associated with defilement. If one is associated with purified dharmas, then at the time of purification, one is called a person associated with purification. Therefore,
