It is said that... meaning, in this way, seeing forms is the eye consciousness, hearing sounds is the ear consciousness, and knowing dharmas is the mind consciousness. If the self becomes the agent, just as the eye faculty, with cause and assistance, gives rise to eye consciousness, so too, I, as the cause and assistant of the arising of eye consciousness, cause the eye consciousness to arise, perform the act of seeing forms, and the state of forms arises in the eye consciousness, so I can see it. Do you want to perform acts such as seeing in this way? Or, just as a king and an official rule over slaves, and by the power of their authority, the slaves offer their thoughts to the king, so too, I control the consciousnesses such as eye consciousness, and by my power, the consciousnesses see forms, and the forms that appear in the consciousnesses are seen and experienced by me. If one is called an agent in this way, neither of these two ways is reasonable. Among them, first, to show that it is unreasonable to be a cause of arising consciousness, therefore, for the time being, it is said: 'Since consciousness arises dependent on two, therefore it is not a cause.' That is, eye consciousness depends on form and also depends on the eye faculty, because it arises from two kinds of causes, so what is called self is not a cause of arising eye consciousness. Why is that? Because it is meaningless. Even if eye consciousness arises from two causes, why am I not a cause of arising consciousness? For example, if wood has already produced fire, then water does not need to produce fire at all at that time, because water cannot do the act of producing fire at all. Similarly, if form and the eye have already produced eye consciousness, then at that time I do not need to do anything at all, because I am not there, and I will not do anything at all. To show that I cannot be the master of consciousness, if I am the master, then it is impermanent, and the undesirable will occur.

Do not do this. It is said, if the self has dominion over those consciousnesses, then whatever appearances and occurrences of form, sound, etc., arise in consciousness, will they be experienced by that self? If so, then sentient beings would always desire to be endowed with happiness alone, and would never want to encounter suffering. Therefore, the consciousnesses endowed with happiness would sometimes arise and sometimes not, and would not become the characteristic of impermanence, but would become the fault of always causing the consciousnesses endowed with happiness to arise. The consciousnesses endowed with unpleasantness and unhappiness would become the fault of never arising at all. Why? Because the self has dominion over the consciousnesses, and whatever happiness and suffering arise in consciousness are experienced by that self. Therefore, the self would always cause the consciousnesses endowed with happiness alone to arise, and the consciousnesses endowed with suffering would never arise at all. To conclude the meaning of these, therefore it is said, "Therefore, both are impossible," and so on. In this way, by the reasoning explained above, it has been shown that the self cannot be the cause of generating consciousnesses, nor can it be the master of consciousnesses. Therefore, the self, as the seer, cannot be the self until liberation, that is its meaning. To show that there are other faults in asserting the existence of a person, it is said, "Establish its action and characteristics." Like this, if the eye faculty and consciousness, etc., exist as real entities, then they have both action and characteristics. Among them, the action of the eye faculty and consciousness is to perform the act of looking at forms. The characteristic of the eye faculty is contact with forms. The characteristic of eye consciousness is the nature of knowing blue and other forms. If it is thought that the person also exists as a real entity, then it is necessary to establish what action that person does, and it is also necessary to establish what kind of characteristics that person has. If it has no action and characteristics, then it is like a rabbit's horn and a barren woman's son.
