Since the person (pudgala) is without inherent existence, it cannot be said to be one with the aggregates (skandhas), nor can it be said to be different. For example, the son of a barren woman cannot be said to be black, nor can it be said to be red. Up to this point, both the non-Buddhists who claim a self and the Buddhists who claim a person are generally refuted. Now, in order to refute the view of the Saṃmitīyas who have entered this teaching and who believe that the person exists as a substance, it is stated that "those who have transgressed the teachings of the teacher and believe that the person exists as a substance should be addressed as follows." "Those" refers to the Saṃmitīyas. "The teacher" refers to the Buddha, the Bhagavan. "His teachings" refers to the twelve branches of scripture, which teach that all phenomena are impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self. "Transgressed" refers to speaking of the meaning of the scriptures in a perverted way. How is it spoken of in a perverted way? Like this, they believe that the person exists as a substance, and they do not say that it is one with the five aggregates, nor do they say that it is different. To these people, one should ask this question. How should one ask? Therefore, it is said: "It exists as a substance, but it is not spoken of; it is necessary to state the reason." Just as we who believe in the non-existence of a person, if we say that the aggregates and the person are one, then the aggregates will become permanent like the self, and the person will become a substance like the aggregates, so we do not say that they are one. If we say that it is different from the aggregates, then the person will become a substance like the self conceived by the non-Buddhists, so we do not say that it is different. Just as we state the reason in this way, since your person exists as a substance, and you do not say that it is one with the aggregates, nor is it different, then why can't you say that the aggregates are one, and why can't you say the reason and necessity for being different from the aggregates? Why? This is a question to those who claim the existence of a person. If you do not say that the person and the aggregates are one, nor do you say that they are different, then why do you need to state this necessity?

The meaning of the word "sa" (earth). In response to this, it is said, "If one does not say either one or different, then it is impossible to do without necessity." It is said that if one does not say that the skandhas and the pudgala (person, sentient being) are of the same nature, then why is it indispensable to have a necessity and reason for not saying one? If one does not say that they are different, then one must state the necessity and reason for not saying that they are different. Without necessity and reason, the pudgala will not be established as real. Furthermore, if one does not say that the skandhas and the pudgala are one, then where one does not say one, it becomes different. For example, fire and water are different, so one does not say that they are one. In that case, the skandhas and the pudgala become different. If one does not say that the skandhas and the pudgala are different, then they become one. For example, fire and the heat of fire are one, so they do not become different. In that case, the skandhas and the pudgala become one. The statement that they are not one but different is not established. If one intends not to speak of the pudgala merely for the sake of example, then if those who speak of the pudgala say this: The pudgala is real, and one does not say that it is one with the skandhas, nor does one say that it is different. In reality, it is impossible to point out something like this. In the world, there is something real that one does not say is one, nor does one say is different. In the same way, this pudgala is also real, and we do not say that it is one with the skandhas, nor do we say that it is different. To show what kind of example it is, it is said: For example, fire and burning are neither different nor non-different. Burning refers to wood. In this way, although fire and wood are real, fire and wood are not different, because fire arises from wood, so fire and wood are not different. If fire and wood were different, then fire would arise even without wood. Since we have not seen fire arising without wood, they are not different. Fire and wood are not non-different, nor are they one. Wood is the cause of fire and does not have the nature of heat, while fire is the result of wood and has the nature of heat.
