The nature of afflictions is manifest. Those who assert the existence of a person (pudgala) argue thus: "Like this, a person does not exist as a substance, but exists as a designation." However, it is impossible to designate something without a basis. For example, it is impossible to designate "a pot" without a pot; rather, it is designated "a pot" in dependence upon a pot. Similarly, upon what does this person depend to be designated? The answer is that the designation of a person is not because the person exists as a substance, but is merely designated upon the five aggregates of grasping. Therefore, it is also said in the sutra: "Whether it is a renunciate or a brahmin, or anyone else, those who designate 'I' or 'mine' are merely seeing and designating 'I' or 'mine' upon the five aggregates of grasping." After answering in this way, others ask: "Regarding which object, such as form, is a person designated? Is the question whether the person is one with it, or whether it is separate?" They say, "You who do not accept the existence of a person, if you designate the five aggregates, from the aggregate of form to the aggregate of consciousness, as a person, then are the five aggregates and the person one, so that whatever the five aggregates are, the person is also that; and whatever the person is, the five aggregates are also that, with one nature, thereby designating the five aggregates as a person? Or are the five aggregates and the person separate, so that the person exists separately apart from the five aggregates and is designated upon the five aggregates?" "Saying" means that those who do not assert the existence of a person answer thus. "One and separate are not asserted, because of that" means that, as stated above, the person exists only as a designation and not as a substance, therefore it cannot be said that the person and the aggregates are of one nature; it cannot be said that the aggregates themselves are the self; nor can it be said that the five aggregates and the person are separate, that the self exists separately apart from the aggregates. "Why?" means that those who assert the existence of a person ask: "Why do you not say that the aggregates and form are one person, and why do you not say that they are separate?" "Because of two faults" means that those who do not assert the existence of a person answer.

That is to say, if it is said that the aggregates and the person are one, there will be no fault, and if it is said that they are different, there will be faults. Because two faults will occur, it is said neither that they are one nor that they are different. This is the meaning. In order to show what these two faults are, it is said, "The aggregates become self and it itself becomes substantial." If it is said that the aggregates and the person are one, then just as the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) is of a permanent nature, the five aggregates also become of a permanent nature. Therefore, it cannot be said that the five aggregates themselves are the self, and the five aggregates themselves are not the nature of the self. Furthermore, if the five aggregates and the self are one, just as the aggregates are substantially existent, the person also becomes substantially existent, because the person is not substantially existent, but nominally existent. This is one fault. If it is said that the person is not the aggregates, but exists separately, then just as the non-Buddhists say that the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) is not the aggregates, but exists separately as substantially existent, the person will also have the fault of existing separately as substantially existent, because the person is not independent of the aggregates, and does not exist as substantially existent and with its own nature established. Thus, because the person is nominally existent, it cannot be said that it is inexpressible. As mentioned above, the person will become non-substantially existent, because it is only nominally existent, and the aggregates and nature of the person will become one. It cannot be said that the aggregates themselves are the nature of the person, nor can it be said that the person is not the aggregates, but exists separately. In reality, there is no nature of the person in the aggregates, and the person is not separately substantially existent independent of the aggregates. This is the meaning. Therefore, for things that are not pointed out in the scriptures to be established, because the aggregates and the person are neither said to be one nor said to be different, if others ask whether the aggregates and the person are one, it will not be pointed out that they are one. If it is asked whether the aggregates and the person are different, it will not be pointed out in the scriptures that they are different. Why?
