Those who wish to refute either hold the view that "there is a person" but do not admit that there is a person, or they hold the view that "there are many persons" but do not deny that there is no person. Why is it established as "saying there is" but then saying "not substantially existent"? If you say that you do not hold to one side, then in the case of the fault of "existence" and the fault of "non-existence," will it not change? Thus, if you only hold to the side of "existence," you will be stained by the fault of "existence." If you only hold to the side of "non-existence," you will be stained by the fault of "non-existence." Therefore, if you do not hold to a one-sided extreme, then you will not be stained by the fault of "existence," nor will you be stained by the fault of "non-existence." So, do not hold to a one-sided extreme. If you hold to one side, how the fault will stain you will be explained later. Then, how is "non-substantial existence" to be understood? This is to say that those who assert the existence of a person will ask: How does that person, which is not a substantially existent thing and has no self-nature, manifest? To show that reason, it is said, "Because it is not perceived." To explain the meaning of that verse itself, it is said, "It is not perceived as a substance, like form and so on." In this regard, there are two valid cognitions that prove that things are substantially existent: direct perception and inference. For example, from form to dharma, because this dharma is possessed by "I," it is apprehended by the eye sense and eye consciousness, etc., and appears visibly. Just as direct perception determines, the person is not apprehended or seen by any sense or consciousness. Because it is not determined by direct perception, the person is not substantially existent. "Apprehending" means to be cognized by the mind. Those who assert the existence of a person say that the person is not something that cannot be cognized by the mind. To this, it is said, "The person is not perceived." Those who assert the existence of a person will object in this way: Only what is seen by the eye is substantially existent; it is not permissible to say that others are not substantially existent. Because there are things that are not seen by the eye but are substantially existent and can be cognized by the mind. For example, mind and mental factors.

Like a gathering of clouds. Similarly, the so-called "object of focus" does not only refer to what is seen by the eyes, but also to the mind's consciousness recognizing and judging "this is like this." Therefore, even if others do not recognize or focus on this person, the minds of us who speak of a self will not consider this person unrecognizable or unobservable. Rather, someone recognizes and focuses on this person. Thus, because this person is made manifest by thought, he is determined by direct perception, so it is said that a person is real. Because a person can be focused on, it is also proven by inference. The Blessed One also said that in this very life, one focuses on and clings to a self. How could it be a focus? If a person is not real but is focused on, then in the sutras, the Blessed One would not say that sentient beings in this very life focus on and cling to a person. It is not like that. The Blessed One also said that sentient beings in this very life focus on and cling to a person. How can one say that a person is unobservable? Here, the so-called "focusing on" means seeing with the mind. "Clinging" means also expressing in words. Although one focuses there, it will not become focusing on reality. Why? Because it is inverted. For those who speak of a self, even if they focus on a person, it is not because the person is real that they focus on and see him. Rather, it is when the person is not real that they focus on and see him. Therefore, their focusing on a person is also inverted. The Blessed One said in the sutras that in this very life, one focuses on and clings to a self. It is not because he considered that the person himself truly exists that he said one focuses on a self. Rather, he considered that sentient beings, although without a self, cling to a self and focus on a self, speaking in an inverted way. Therefore, he said that in this very life, one focuses on and clings to a self. How is this known? Those who speak of a self asked: Because this person exists, one focuses on and cl
