That is the meaning. How should one ask? Therefore, regarding lamps and the like that are formed in an instant, even when they are not moving, if one does not recognize them, how can one consider them to be momentary? If one says that whatever is not recognized as momentary is not considered momentary, then it is established for both Buddhists and non-Buddhists that lamps and streams of water are momentary. Since this is the case, even though those are momentary, if one recognizes that lamps and water are momentary when they are moved by the wind and do not move, why should one consider those to be momentary as well? One should question in this way. If someone says, "Because one does not see things later as they were before," one should also ask in this way. After asking in that way, if someone says, "Lamps are initially large and bright in color, but later those are not seen. The lamp becomes small and unclear, becoming smaller and smaller, and finally the lamp dies and becomes invisible, so it is momentary." Regarding this statement, if one says that other conditioned phenomena such as vases, even if left for a year or a month, do not become smaller and smaller, so they are not considered momentary. Regarding this statement, one should also ask in this way. How should one ask? Therefore, why don't you consider conditioned phenomena to be like that later? In this way, those that appear initially but do not appear later are considered momentary. And seedlings, houses, and vases also appear initially, but in between, their shapes and colors change, and later they become invisible, so why are they not considered momentary? One should ask in this way. If someone says that lamps and the like and conditioned phenomena that are not lamps are different in nature, after asking in this way, if others say that the nature of lamps and vases and other conditioned phenomena are different. Lamps arise in an instant and have the nature of producing heat and light. Vases and the like will be destroyed in the future, and have the nature of being hard and able to hold water, so because the natures are different, lamps are momentary, while other conditioned phenomena are not momentary.

Then, it should also be explained in this way. How should it be explained? Therefore, the difference in characteristics is twofold: difference in nature and difference in function. That is to say, there are two kinds of differences between phenomena: difference in nature and difference in function. Among them, the difference in nature is like the nature of fire being hot and the nature of water being wet. The difference in function is like lamps and the like arising and ceasing in each moment, while other phenomena such as vases arise and last for a certain period of time before decaying. If it is considered that the nature is different, then it can be used as an example. If it is considered that the lamp is the nature of heat and brightness, and other phenomena such as vases are the nature of hardness and being able to hold water, then the momentariness of the lamp can be used as an example to prove the momentariness of phenomena. It is unreasonable to use one identical thing to prove another identical thing. In order to explain this reason, that nature itself is not its example, just as using a lamp to exemplify a lamp, using a cow to exemplify a cow. Like this, if one wants to prove that some phenomena are permanent or impermanent, then one uses other things with different natures to prove it. For example, to prove that the light of the sun is hot, one uses things with the same nature as it as an example, such as using undifferentiated heat as a metaphor. If one wants to prove that it is not a cow, one uses a cow as an example, such as not being a cow is like being a cow as an example. Things with the same nature are not suitable as examples, such as using a lamp to exemplify a lamp, using a cow to exemplify a cow is not suitable as an example. If the function is different, then it can be used as an example. If it is said that the function of lamps and other phenomena such as vases arising and ceasing is different, then the lamp can be used as an example for vases and the like. Like this, the lamp is known in the world as arising and ceasing in an instant, while the vase, although it also arises and ceases in an instant, is not widely known in the world. Therefore, using the lamp's momentary arising and ceasing being widely known as an example, to prove that the vase's momentary arising and ceasing is not widely known.
