Etc. Regarding the word "etc.," the arising of internal formations has fourteen aspects: first, arising; then, increasing arising; and so forth, arising as an abiding thing; arising as change; arising as maturation; final arising; similarly, supreme arising; arising as luminous; arising as non-luminous; arising as going to another place; arising with seeds; arising without seeds; and arising as an image. For these fourteen types of arising, the cause and valid cognition that establish them as momentary are: the distinction between cause and measure, etc., from what is called following the mind, up to what is called, "All compounded things are momentary." The meaning is explained by these. Regarding what is called increasing, from the beginning of increasing, etc., up to what is called, "All compounded things are momentary," the five verses establish that internal formations are momentary. If one asks how these are established as momentary, these five verses explain how internal formations are established as momentary. What is called the first arising is what is initially the manifest accomplishment of the body. After explaining the definition of the fourteen types of arising of internal formations, later it will be explained by reasoning how these are momentary. Among these, what is called the first arising is when the consciousness belonging to the category of death ceases, and in the mother's womb, consciousness enters the first moment, and after fainting, whatever connects with the nature of birth is called the first arising. If it were permanent, then after the consciousness belonging to the category of death ceases, it would be impossible for the consciousness belonging to the category of birth to arise. But that is not the case; after the consciousness belonging to the category of death ceases, the consciousness belonging to the category of birth arises, and it should be understood as momentary. What is called increasing is from the first moment of birth onwards. What is called increasing arising is in the first moment, the moment when consciousness enters the mother's womb, after the second moment of unawareness.

“Urnurpo,” “Mermerpo,” and “Tartarpo,” and so on, are used to refer to arising. If it were not momentary, then once the nature of “Urnurpo” ceased, “Mermerpo” and so on could not arise. But that is not the case; rather, after the previous “Urnurpo” and so on cease, other “Mermerpo” and so on arise. Therefore, it should be recognized as momentary. “Etc.” refers to food, sleep, brahmacharya, and entering into samadhi, and so on. The meaning of these words is that the body changes from being weak and emaciated to being strong and stout. In the desire realm, food, sleep, and brahmacharya cause the body to become strong from being weak. In the form realm and so on, entering into meditative absorption causes the body to become stout. If these things were permanent, then food and so on could not cause the body to change from being weak to being strong. But that is not the case; rather, food and so on cause the body to grow from being weak to being strong. Therefore, things should be recognized as momentary. The object of location is that which, like eye consciousness, has the location of the eye, and so on, as its location. The arising of the object of location is that the six consciousnesses, from eye consciousness to mind consciousness, are called location. The six faculties, from the eye faculty to the mind faculty, are called location. If the consciousnesses that are the location are not momentary, then their faculties cannot be non-momentary. Therefore, they change momentarily. Change is because desire and so on cause colors and so on to change. The arising of change is that when the mind arises in the aspect of desire and so on, the body also becomes different from before, with a smiling face and a complexion that is not bright. When anger arises, the body and so on also change into other forms, such as frowning and gnashing teeth. Such things are not possible in permanent dharmas, but they are possible in impermanent dharmas. Therefore, conditioned things should be recognized as momentary. Maturation is from birth, through infancy, youth, adolescence, and aging.
