The thought arises, "It is I." To explain that very point, if it remains the same, it will not ultimately perish, because there is no difference from the initial moment. If things do not perish in each moment, but have a nature of constant existence, then that thing will not ultimately perish either. Why? Because just as the initial moment does not perish but has the nature of existence, so in the later moment it is the same thing with the nature of existence, because the thing has not changed, so it will not perish later either. To conclude with these reasons, therefore it cannot be that. It is said, according to the reasons stated above, because things will ultimately perish, therefore it is not reasonable to see the same thing later as what was seen before. Those words explain the meaning of the word "because of obstruction." Also, because the ultimate change is obvious, in another way, internal things will ultimately become wrinkled, hair turns white, etc., seeing these changes, external things will also see changes such as pillars rotting inside, etc. Therefore, it should be recognized that momentary things are momentary. To explain what change is, the so-called complete change is to become other. The meaning of the so-called complete change, for internal things, is also different from the previous one, and in later times it becomes other things such as white hair. For external things, also pillars, etc., are different from the previous ones, and become the nature of decay, which is called change. If it had not started from the beginning, then the complete change of internal and external things would not appear in the end, if things had started from the beginning with the nature of aging and decay in each moment, then for internal things, the other changes of becoming white hair etc. would not be seen in the end, and for external things, it would not become the nature of decay etc. in the end.

Therefore, it will not be seen as having changed. Thus, regarding the statement "from the very beginning, change is initiated," as stated earlier, external and internal things will eventually transform into qualities different from what they were before. Therefore, it should be understood that things, from the very beginning, initiate change in each and every moment. Others object: If each moment initiates change in the qualities of aging and decay, why is it that when one sees it later, the thought arises, "I am seeing the very thing I saw before"? To this, it is said, "What arises gradually will eventually become apparent," because from the first moment, the nature of similarity between the previous and subsequent moments has arisen and initiated change. Eventually, qualities such as white hair and qualities such as decay will become apparent. Therefore, change is initiated from the very beginning. To illustrate this example, it is said, "Like the state of yogurt from milk." For example, the transformation of milk into yogurt also begins from the very first moment, initiating a gradual thickening in each moment. Eventually, the thick nature will manifest as yogurt, becoming visible and apparent. Again, others object: If each moment initiates change, why is it that the initiation of change is not perceived? The answer is: Just as when the change is so subtle that it cannot be fully discerned, something similar follows, therefore, it should be known that "this is that." For example, milk from the very beginning initiates a change into a thicker nature, but because the initiation of change is so subtle, the change is not discernible. Similarly, external and internal things also initiate change in the qualities of aging and decay in a subtle way, so it is not perceived at that time, but eventually aging and decay become clearly apparent, and aging and decay are initially recognized. Therefore, because conditioned phenomena tremble incessantly like moths, and the later moment arises similarly to the previous moment, the thought arises, "I am seeing the very previous moment." That is the meaning.
