It is destroyed by its own nature, which shows the nature of non-destruction. Because it is measured by one nature, anything that is born cannot abide. Regarding this statement, the nature of all compounded dharmas is not the nature of permanence, nor the nature of impermanence, all compounds are only one nature. What is it? It is the nature of impermanence and momentariness. Thus, compounded dharmas are determined to be of the nature of momentariness, so it is impossible for compounded dharmas to abide for a short time and then be destroyed later. If you ask: How does it appear that the nature of compounded dharmas is determined to be one? Because it is to show the logical proof of the scriptures. The nature of compounded dharmas is determined to be one, and the Blessed One also said this, that "compounds are impermanent." This has been said. The nature of compounded dharmas is only determined to be impermanent, which was said by the Blessed One. How did he say it? He said, "All compounds are impermanent." If it does not perish as soon as it is born, then it will not be impermanent and non-existent for a short time, so it will not be determined as the only nature of impermanence. If things do not perish as soon as they are born, but abide for a short time and then perish later, then it will not be determined as the only nature of impermanence. Why? Because before it perishes, it will constantly abide for a short time, so it will become permanent. Then it will perish, so it will also become impermanent. If compounded dharmas are divided into permanent and impermanent, then it will not be determined as one nature, and it will contradict the scriptures. These words show the meaning of the word "nature is determined." If each moment has already arisen, and there is no previous one, then it will become a statement without "this is it." If others say this: Things are destroyed in every moment, and then another moment is born that is similar to the previous and the next one. If this is the case, then when the things that were seen before are seen later, the thought and idea of "I have seen those things" should not arise. But this is not the case, the things that were seen before are seen again later.

When the thought arises, "I saw that," things do not perish in each instant, but rather last for a very short time and then perish. Therefore, in order to show that this is unreasonable, in order to follow the similarities, it is said, "because it has become like that." From seeing things to later seeing things, the reason why the thought arises, "I saw that," is because in the first instant, whatever the color and size of things are, in the later instant, a color and size similar to that instant will also arise. If similarities also arise in the later instant, then there is no fault in the thought arising, "I saw that." In order to show an example, it is said, "like the pebbles of a magician." For example, if a magician throws about a hundred illusory pebbles into the sky, the thought of throwing many does not arise, but rather the thought of seeing one arises. Similarly, when things arise, they also arise as quickly as bats, and because the things that arise before and after are exactly the same, the thought arises, "I saw that." For example, when rivers and the like flow, although they stop and arise in each instant, because the later instants are also exactly the same as the previous instants, the thought of seeing those waters arises. Those words indicate the meaning of "following." If it becomes that kind of thought because of similarity, how do you know that it is not because of that thing itself? If others also refute in this way, saying: Because the previously seen thing is seen later, it is not seeing that the previous thing has not been destroyed, but rather because other instants similar to the previous instant stopping are completely produced, because similarity has arisen, how do you know that it will become the thought of seeing the previous one? Isn't it seeing the previously seen thing without stopping? Who knows? Thus they refute. In order to show that that is unreasonable, it is said, "because it will cease." Because things will eventually cease, it is not seeing the previous thing later, but rather seeing the similar thing that arose after the previous instant ceased, so one sees that.
