being in it. In either of these two cases, it is unreasonable. In order to show that the first case is unreasonable, it is said again: It is unreasonable for the self to exist. This is because it cannot be said that because the self has the power to exist, it can exist for a certain period of time. This is also unreasonable. If someone asks: How is it unreasonable? Therefore, it is said: Because the self does not abide. That is to say, since the internal and external conditioned dharmas do not abide by themselves and are of the nature of destruction, it cannot be said that they exist because the self has the power to exist. If someone asks: Why is it the nature of destruction? Therefore, it is said: Because it cannot ultimately exist. That is to say, since all conditioned dharmas will eventually disappear, there is no power for the self to exist. If the self has the power to exist, then it should have the power to exist constantly, and it should ultimately exist. For example, space is a constant nature, without arising and ceasing. For conditioned dharmas, it is impossible to exist ultimately, because they will be destroyed, so it should be known that there is no power for the self to exist. In order to show that the second case is unreasonable, it is said: It is also unreasonable to be the cause of existence. That is to say, it cannot be said that because of the help of the causes and conditions of existence, it can exist for a certain period of time. This is also unreasonable. In order to show how it is unreasonable, it is said: Because there is no it, nothing like this can be found. That is to say, there is no cause for things to exist in the middle, because the cause for things to exist has not been seen, so it cannot be said that it is made to exist by the cause of existence. These words explain the reason why the self does not abide. If it is said that even if there is no cause for existence, it exists because there is no cause for destruction, and after encountering the cause for destruction, it will eventually be destroyed. If someone says this, the thing itself has no power to exist, and cannot exist. Even if there is no other cause for existence to maintain it, the thing does not exist, but during the period when the thing exists, it will be destroyed.

Without the cause of destruction, it will not be destroyed before encountering the conditions for destruction. It is only when encountering the conditions for destruction that it will be destroyed. Before that, it remains without being destroyed, so it is said. To illustrate that metaphor, it is said, "Like fire burning blue," etc. For example, the blue color of iron appears blue before there is a cause for its destruction and before it is encountered. Later, when it encounters the cause of destruction, the fire destroys the blue, and it turns red. Similarly, a vase does not break when it has not encountered the cause of destruction, such as a stone. It is only when it encounters the cause of destruction, such as a stone, that it will be destroyed, so it is said. Even so, to show that it is unreasonable, it is said again, "Because there is not that, it is not possible like that." For example, things have a cause for arising, but no cause for destruction. For example, when a stone is thrown into the sky, there is a cause for throwing it into the sky, such as a hand, but no cause for it to fall to the ground, like falling by itself. Similarly, because things have no cause, it is also unreasonable to say that they remain until they encounter the cause of destruction. To show how it is unreasonable, it is said, "There is no cause for destruction even later." For example, when it is said that fire destroys the blue of iron, just as before encountering fire, there is no cause for the destruction of the blue of iron, and the blue destroys itself. Even when encountering fire, the fire destroys the blue, but the cause of the destruction of the blue is not caused by the fire, but the blue destroys itself. If others say this, if it destroys itself, not by fire, why does the blue not become invisible before encountering fire? The answer is, it is not established that fire causes the blue to be destroyed, but it is possible to establish that it produces something different. It is not established that fire destroys the blue of iron, but the blue destroys itself, and the fire produces something else. What does it produce?
