It is not seen! The cause of warmth is fire and sunlight, etc. It also produces cold, and it also produces warmth, which is not seen! Those words show the meaning of the word 'arising from a cause.' Or, for 'another time ceases,' it is also contradictory. In another way, the external and internal conditioned phenomena do not cease immediately upon arising. After existing for a short time, they cease later, which is also contradictory. To show what it contradicts, the scriptures and reason are mentioned. Saying 'contradicts' means there are two kinds of contradiction: contradiction with the scriptures and contradiction with reason. If it is said that things arise and then cease after existing for a short time, then it will contradict the words of the Bhagavan. To show how it contradicts the words, 'Whatever the Bhagavan' and so on are mentioned. Conditioned phenomena are like illusions. Just as illusions arise from the power of causes and conditions, so too do external and internal conditioned phenomena arise from the power of causes and conditions, so they are like illusions. Because they are of the nature of arising and ceasing, they are called destruction. Because they do not last longer than a moment after arising, they are called temporary. Because each moment arises and immediately perishes, it is said to be short-lived. If things exist for a short time, then it contradicts the scriptures that say so. Furthermore, to show that it contradicts both the scriptures and reason, it is said, 'Even when a yogi contemplates, when contemplating the arising and ceasing of those conditioned phenomena, they see that they cease in each moment.' Because the yogi meditates on and practices the Four Noble Truths, when contemplating the characteristics of arising and ceasing of external and internal conditioned phenomena, they see that the conditioned phenomena perish and cease in each moment. Because they see in this way, aversion arises from the conditioned phenomena. Having arisen from aversion, they will become separated from desire. Having separated from desire, they will attain liberation and nirvana. If it is not like that, then for them, there is no aversion, separation from desire, or liberation.

The meaning of "becoming" is: If all conditioned phenomena were not momentary, but were permanent, then even yogis who contemplate them would not see that all conditioned phenomena are destroyed moment by moment. If they do not see it that way, they will not become disgusted. If they do not become disgusted, they will not be separated from desire. If they are not separated from desire, they will not be liberated. If that were the case, then it would be wrong, because yogis see momentary destruction, so they eventually become liberated. Therefore, all conditioned phenomena are momentary. In order to show the opposite example, it is said, "For example, others see destruction at the time of death, etc." For example, other sentient beings do not see that all conditioned phenomena are destroyed moment by moment, but when the life force is cut off and they die, they see destruction and impermanence. Those who do not give rise to disgust until they die. When they see death and destruction, they give rise to disgust, just as yogis, when practicing yoga, see all conditioned phenomena destroyed moment by moment, so they give rise to disgust. Or, if yogis, like ordinary beings, only see destruction at the time of death and then give rise to disgust, then just as ordinary beings only give rise to disgust at the time of death, they will not be liberated. This would lead to the fault that yogis would also not be able to be liberated. This shows the meaning of the phrase "because of the opposite." If conditioned phenomena arise and are able to exist on their own, so that they can exist on their own at other times, or some causes can exist, then further investigation is needed. Are all conditioned phenomena not destroyed momentarily, but arise and then are destroyed after a year or some time? For the question of existing for a period of time, it needs to be examined from two aspects. How to examine it? Do conditioned phenomena exist for a period of time without being destroyed because the conditioned phenomena themselves have the nature of existence, have the power to exist, so they can exist for a period of time? Or do the conditioned phenomena themselves not have the power to exist, but rely on the help of some causes and conditions that allow them to exist, so they can exist for a period of time?
