The desireless samadhi is taught in order to abandon the five aggregates. Because through the desireless samadhi, one knows that the five aggregates of close acquisition are of the nature of suffering, and thus abandons them. Also free from the imputed person and the imputed dharma. The signless samadhi is taught in order to manifest the perfectly established nature of abandoning the five aggregates in that state. Nirvana is manifested through the signless samadhi. The explanation of the sixth chapter of the Ornament of the Sutras is completed. In the "Differentiation of the Dharma Sutra," there are two verses, namely, what is the connection between explaining the four Dharma Sutras after the three samadhis? If the objects and characteristics of the samadhis have been explained above, then the cause of which dharma to meditate on to achieve the three samadhis has not been shown. Therefore, in order to show that meditating on the four Dharma Sutras is the cause of the three samadhis, the four Dharma Sutras are explained after the samadhis. For the cause of samadhi, the Dharma Sutras are four kinds. The bodhisattva is explained to benefit sentient beings. It means that in order to manifest the three samadhis of emptiness, desirelessness, and signlessness, the bodhisattvas explain the four Dharma Sutras, namely, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all conditioned phenomena are suffering, all dharmas are selfless, and peace and nirvana. To whom is it explained? It is explained to sentient beings. Why is it explained? It is explained for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings. Among them, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all conditioned phenomena are suffering, and so on. The Dharma Sutra that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, and the Dharma Sutra that all conditioned phenomena are suffering are explained as the reality of the cause of manifesting the desireless samadhi. If one meditates on the two aspects that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent and all conditioned phenomena are suffering

By not clinging to and not wishing for compounded things that are like a whetstone, the samadhi of no aspiration is accomplished. Therefore, the two Dharma passages are taught as the cause of the samadhi of no aspiration. Regarding "all dharmas are without self," which is called emptiness, the Dharma passage of "all dharmas are without self" is taught as the cause of the samadhi of emptiness. If one meditates on the absence of self in the imputed person and the absence of self in the imputed dharmas, the samadhi of emptiness is accomplished. Therefore, the third Dharma passage is taught as the cause of the samadhi of emptiness. Regarding "peace is nirvana" and so on, the Dharma passage of "peace is nirvana" is taught as the cause of the samadhi of no characteristics. Nirvana is the separation from all characteristics such as faculties and objects, and it transcends all discriminations and observations. If one meditates on this state, the samadhi of no characteristics is accomplished. Therefore, the fourth Dharma passage is taught as the cause of the samadhi of no characteristics. Regarding "how is the meaning of impermanence" and so on, four Dharma passages regarding impermanence and so on are explained. What is the meaning of impermanence? What is the meaning of suffering? What is the meaning of no self? What is the meaning of peace? This is its meaning. Regarding "the meaning of non-existence" and so on, the sound of "impermanence" in Indian language is "Anitya-tā." "A" means non-existence. "Nitya-tā" means permanence. The birth and destruction of Bodhisattvas are not the meaning of impermanence, but the meaning of what is always non-existent is the meaning of impermanence. What is always non-existent? For compounded things, the imputed person and the imputed dharmas are non-existent like a rabbit's horn, and the meaning of the imputed nature being always non-existent is the meaning of impermanence. Therefore, in the noble *Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra*, it is also said, "What is the meaning of impermanence? It is the meaning of non-existence and the meaning of untruth, not the meaning of the destruction of things." The meaning of impermanence is dharma.
