It is said that the shamatha and vipassana of the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhumis purify the Buddha's base, crystal-like color, etc., and are therefore called completely pure. Because it enables one to attain Buddhahood by abandoning even the latent tendencies of afflictions and cognitive obscurations, it is called extremely pure. This is a detailed distinction between shamatha and vipassana. Shamatha and vipassana, with steadfastness on all the bhumis, that is the accomplishment of all yogas. It is said that the word yoga refers to means. Steadfast Bodhisattvas cultivate shamatha and vipassana on all ten bhumis as a means of accomplishing all benefits for themselves and others. This is the function of shamatha and vipassana. That which is conditioned is conditioned, it is said that whatever has effort and exertion is called conditioned. In the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhumis, without effort and exertion, shamatha and vipassana are spontaneously accomplished, therefore it is called unconditioned. Verses are of two kinds for those who act skillfully in means, it is said that what is the connection between explaining the occasion of skillful means after shamatha and vipassana? Shamatha and vipassana are the means of accomplishing all benefits, and the cultivation of shamatha and vipassana should also be done with skillful means. In order not to fall into other vehicles, one should dedicate the realization of the meaning of the Great Vehicle to this, therefore the occasion of skillful means is explained after shamatha and vipassana. Among them, the Bodhisattva's means are also fivefold. Completing the Buddha's dharmas, etc., it is said that the Buddha's dharmas refer to the perfections such as generosity, the aspects of enlightenment, the powers, the fearlessnesses, and the omniscient wisdom. The means of perfecting these is non-conceptual wisdom, this is the first means. Therefore, even if there are a hundred thousand Prajnaparamitas, if one wants to perfect the perfection of generosity, one should study the Prajnaparamita, even those who want to attain omniscient wisdom.

One should train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Regarding "for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings," the method for fully maturing sentient beings is the four objects of gathering. Through this, one rescues sentient beings from non-virtuous states and places them in virtuous states; this is the second method. Regarding "quickly attaining," the method for quickly attaining direct knowledge and quickly attaining complete enlightenment is, as stated in the sutra: One should confess all sins, one should rejoice in all merits, one should supplicate all Buddhas, may my wisdom quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment. These four phrases from the sutra section sequentially show confession, rejoicing, supplication, and dedication. This is the third method. Regarding "accomplishing activities," the method for accomplishing activities is the doors of samadhi and dharani, as these two accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Samadhi accomplishes the benefit of others through showing various kinds of miraculous powers. Dharani accomplishes one's own benefit by retaining the meaning and words of what has been said; this is the fourth method. Regarding "skilled in not cutting off the path," not cutting off the path is not cutting off the lineage of the Thus-Gone One, and its method is the path of non-abiding nirvana. There are two aspects to the path of non-abiding nirvana: wisdom and compassion. One who possesses wisdom, even if abiding in samsara, is not stained by the faults of samsara, just as a lotus grows from water but is not stained by the faults of water, mud. One who possesses compassion does not merely enter into nirvana like noble Hearers, but works for the benefit of sentient beings in samsara; this is the fifth method. Here, the word "cut" shows the excellent classification of methods. The methods of Bodhisattvas are unequaled in all grounds. Worldly people abide in methods in order to accomplish their own benefit. Noble Hearers and Solitary Buddhas also abide in methods in order to attain their own fruit, but Bodhisattvas
