That which is called, abiding correctly is called abiding in correct samadhi. Relying on the four uncontaminated samadhis of the form realm, placing the mind on the mind, all three realms are exhausted in mind only, there is nothing other than mind. Thus, placing the mind in one-pointedness is called quiescence. Only that is the accomplishment of quiescence. If one finds the mind equally abiding, then wisdom arises that knows things as they truly are. The non-conceptual wisdom that knows the meaning of all dharmas without error is called insight. These are the brief explanations of the characteristics of quiescence and insight in the Great Vehicle. Therefore, in the Sutra of the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it is also said: What is inexhaustible quiescence? It is that which is said to be the mind being peaceful, extremely peaceful, and nearly peaceful, and so on. What is the inexhaustible insight of the Bodhisattvas? It is the path of cultivation that is the aspect of wisdom, knowing dharmas without wavering, without a lord, and without sentient beings, and so on. That is the characteristic of quiescence and insight. In order to show the distinctions of quiescence and insight, all of them completely pervade. It is said, such as, "Those" and so on. The word "those" refers to quiescence and insight. Quiescence and insight are the cultivation of the aspects of enlightenment, those who wish to attain dhyana and samadhi, and those who wish to attain clairvoyance and so on, all of them must cultivate quiescence and insight. Because quiescence and insight are indispensable for accomplishing qualities, quiescence and insight are said to be all-pervading. One part, wishing to be the cause of indivisibility. As it is said, when one only cultivates quiescence, and the aspect of insight is small, that is also called cultivating one part. Like cultivating the formless absorptions. In the formless absorptions, the aspect of quiescence is great and the aspect of insight is small. When one only cultivates insight, and the aspect of quiescence is small, that is also called cultivating one part. Like cultivating the first dhyana, second dhyana, and third dhyana of the form realm. At the time of those three

The component of insight is more, and the component of calm abiding is less. The combined practice of calm abiding and insight is called indivisible, which is when practicing in the fourth dhyana of the form realm. The practice of calm abiding and insight in the part of practice with faith is called wanting to be the cause. Why is that? Because practicing calm abiding and insight in the place of practice with faith will realize the first ground. The calm abiding and insight of practice with faith is the place to enter the first ground, so it is the cause. What do calm abiding and insight both pervade? Therefore, as it is said in the Sutra Pitaka, "Ema, monks," and so on, the Sutra also says that if you want to be separated from desire, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, and want to attain the first dhyana with investigation and analysis, you should practice calm abiding and insight, and if you want to attain the second dhyana, the third dhyana, the fourth dhyana, supernormal powers, etc., you should practice calm abiding and insight, so it is pervasive. What is called complete understanding is that the calm abiding and insight of the first ground is called the calm abiding and insight of complete understanding, because at that time, one will realize the nature of the pervading dharmadhatu. What is called arising is that when practicing calm abiding and insight in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grounds, it is called the calm abiding and insight of arising, because the calm abiding and insight at that time will exhaust the practice of characteristics and abandon all characteristics. What is called without characteristics is that when practicing calm abiding and insight in the seventh ground, it is called the calm abiding and insight without characteristics, because at that time, one will not regard the various dharmas such as the Sutra Pitaka as different characteristics, but will practice everything as one taste. What is called unconditioned is that the calm abiding and insight of the eighth, ninth, and tenth grounds is called the practice of unconditioned calm abiding and insight, because it is naturally accomplished without effort and diligence, and one abides in calm abiding and insight. Completely pure and extremely pure.
