What is right thought? Thoughts that give rise to afflictions such as desire, hatred, and ignorance are not thoughts. Thoughts that give rise to the aggregates of discipline, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the wisdom of liberation are called right thoughts. Understanding right view and thought means explaining these teachings to others for the benefit of sentient beings, and abandoning falsehood, harsh speech, idle talk, and divisive speech, which harm sentient beings, is called right speech. Therefore, in the "Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra," it is also said: What is right speech? Speech that does not completely harm oneself or others; that does not defile oneself with afflictions or defile others; that does not harm oneself or others; speech that enters the noble path, possessing speech that corresponds to such equanimity, this is called right speech. From the perspective of the body, abandoning killing, stealing, and unchastity, and entering the path of liberation is called right action. Therefore, in the "Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra," it is also said: What is right action? Not engaging in actions that lead to black results, and so on. Abandoning flattery and hypocrisy in seeking robes, begging bowls, etc., and living according to the Dharma is called right livelihood. Therefore, in the "Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra," it is also said: What is right livelihood? Not abandoning the noble lineage, not abandoning the qualities of practice, giving away possessions, without hypocrisy, without flattery, without persuasion, and so on. Relying on right view, thought, action, and livelihood, through meditation, in order to abandon the afflictions to be abandoned and the obscurations of knowledge, continuously meditating on the noble path is called right effort.

Therefore, in the Sutra of the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it is also said: What is right effort? Any wrong effort, that is, the effort of desire, hatred, ignorance, and afflictive latent tendencies that are not permitted by the noble ones, is not to be desired; any right effort, that is, the effort of entering the noble path and the truth, placing effort on the path to going beyond sorrow, following after this effort, this is called right effort. How not to forget the meaning of the dharmas that have been understood, and to appear clearly in the mind, this is called right mindfulness. Therefore, in the Sutra of the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it is also said: What is right mindfulness? Any mindfulness that is very closely established, not deceiving, and guarding, not forgetting the noble path, this is called right mindfulness. Likewise, to place the mind one-pointedly in the sphere of reality, this is called right concentration. Therefore, in the Sutra of the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it is also said: What is right concentration? That is, truly equal and all dharmas equal, and so forth. In short, the eight limbs of the noble path can be summarized into two aspects: what to do during activity and what to do during abiding. Among these, activity is engaging in merit and walking, etc. At that time, one should abide in right speech, right action, and right livelihood. Abiding is entering into meditative concentration. At that time, one should practice both shamatha (calm abiding) and vipashyana (insight). Among these, right view, right thought, and right effort are the retinue of vipashyana. Right view is vipashyana itself. Right thought and right effort are called the retinue of vipashyana. Right mindfulness and right concentration are the retinue of shamatha. Concentration is shamatha itself. Mindfulness is the retinue of shamatha. How to follow with knowing? From that, birth will also occur. Among these, "from that" means "below". The first ground is purified in the path of seeing.

After cultivating the seven limbs of enlightenment, in order to eliminate the obscurations to knowledge and the afflictive obscurations to be abandoned through cultivation, the eight limbs of the noble path are cultivated below the second ground. That is to say, on the first ground, through the limb of enlightenment of discriminating the Dharma, one understands the suchness of selflessness of persons and phenomena. From the second ground onwards, entering into that very Dharma and cultivating that very Dharma is called right view. How to establish what is known? To the question, after understanding suchness through right view, it is established as it is through right thought. How is it established as it is? Thinking, "I have understood suchness with equality and the order of cultivation," and also explaining to others how the Dharmas that have been understood are made the main content, is called right thought. In order to show that meaning, it is mentioned, "entering into the establishment." The twelve divisions of scripture, such as the Sutras, spoken by the Bhagavan, are called the establishment. By understanding the meaning of the Sutras, etc., through right thought, it is called entering into the establishment. Regarding "three actions are completely pure," through right speech, right action, and right livelihood, the three actions are made completely pure, that is, the actions of speech, the actions of body, and the actions of body and speech are purified. Among them, through right speech that abandons falsehood, harsh speech, idle talk, and divisive speech, the action of speech is purified. By abandoning killing, stealing, and unchaste conduct, right action purifies the action of body. By abandoning flattery and hypocrisy, etc., from the aspect of speech, and living by abandoning pretense, etc., from the aspect of body, right livelihood purifies the actions of both body and speech. The antidote is also cultivation, for "the paths to be known are obscurations to special qualities," through right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration, the obscurations to knowledge and the obscurations of karma are eliminated in sequence.
