Because it increases, it is called a root. Regarding the classification of strengths, there is a section called "chapter." Someone asks: What is the connection between explaining the five powers after the five roots? Answer: As long as disbelief and laziness, etc., the opposing factors of the five roots, create obstacles from time to time, then it is called a root. After that, when the five roots themselves, because of long-term habituation to the object, become unable to create obstacles such as disbelief, these five roots themselves are called the five powers, so there is a connection between explaining power after the root. "Entering the ground without any afflictions is what is desired." The meaning of this sentence is: How can one attain the first ground, and how can one enter the first ground? When afflictions such as disbelief, laziness, loss of mindfulness, distraction, and perverted wisdom do not taint, and are not overcome by afflictions, it is considered strength. In order to show the meaning of that, it is said: "Faith, etc., are all completely defiled, because the opposing factors are weak, that should be known as strength." That is to say, the opposing factor of faith is disbelief. When disbelief becomes weak, so that it cannot overcome faith, and whether it is the gods, demons, or Brahma of this world, or anything that is in accordance with worldly dharma, it cannot be hindered by the pervasiveness of afflictions, it is called the power of faith. Therefore, in the "Holy Inexhaustible Wisdom Sutra," it is also said: "What is the power of faith? That is, not abandoning aspiration and faith. Even if an evil demon transforms into the form of a Buddha and comes before me, wanting to separate me from any thought of the Dharma and hinder aspiration, a Bodhisattva of aspiration with the power of faith will not be born, moved, or shaken by power, this is the power of faith." Furthermore, the opposing factor of diligence is laziness. When one is not controlled by laziness and continuously cultivates virtuous dharmas, it is called the power of diligence. Therefore, in the "Holy Inexhaustible Wisdom Sutra," it is also said: "What is the power of diligence? A Bodhisattva's diligence...

Whatever efforts are made in any area, and whatever virtuous practices are cultivated, strength arises from them. The bodhisattva who possesses this strength cannot be moved, shaken, or altered in their vows by the world until they have transcended that state. This is called the strength of diligence. The opposite of the strength of mindfulness is the loss of mindfulness. Because the opposing force is weak, no affliction can cause the bodhisattva's mindfulness to be lost, and they will never forget the Dharma they have heard and contemplated. This is the strength of mindfulness. Therefore, in the "Noble Mañjuśrī's Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra," it is also said: 'What is the strength of mindfulness? It is when the mind is focused on any place where the Dharma is remembered, and no other affliction can shake it. Because the strength of mindfulness has arisen, it can destroy all afflictions, and the bodhisattva's mindfulness is not disturbed by any afflictions. This is called the strength of mindfulness.' The opposite of the strength of samādhi is the mind being distracted by external objects. Because the opposing force is weak, no external object can distract the mind, and one will not be influenced by dullness or excitement. This is called the strength of samādhi. Therefore, in the "Noble Mañjuśrī's Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra," it is also said: 'What is the strength of samādhi? It is dwelling and practicing in solitude, away from all disturbances. Even though it is shown extensively through all paths of sound and language, it does not obstruct the first dhyana.' and so on. The opposite of the strength of wisdom is wrong wisdom. Because the opposing force is weak, one becomes free from doubt about anything and is able to understand all transcendent Dharmas. This is called the strength of wisdom. Therefore, in the "Noble Mañjuśrī's Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra," it is also said: 'What is the strength of wisdom? It is the unobstructed understanding of transcendent Dharmas. Even if one is born and arises without a teacher, they can manifest samādhi through skillful means, knowledge, mantras, and power.' and so on.
