Because morality becomes superior, it is explained later; because meditation is inferior, it is explained earlier; because wisdom is superior, it is explained later. Therefore, the order of the six perfections is arranged in this way. If the former is inferior and the latter is superior, why is that? For example, giving and doing good deeds, but due to reasons such as greed and hatred, one may commit actions such as killing, so it is mixed with afflictions and is inferior. Morality is to restrain the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and not to engage in actions such as killing, which is a superior state. Morality only refrains from harming the lives and property of others, but if others harm one's own life and property, one cannot endure it. Patience, on the other hand, can endure even if others harm one's own life and property, and does not retaliate, so it has fewer afflictions than morality. Because it becomes superior, patience is explained after morality. In the time of patience, one only refrains from harming others, but does not continuously practice virtuous Dharma. Diligence, on the other hand, continuously cultivates virtue, which is more superior than patience, so diligence is explained after it. In the time of diligence, one only continuously practices virtue, but cannot destroy afflictions. Meditation, on the other hand, can destroy afflictions, so it is more superior than diligence, so meditation is explained after it. Meditation only prevents afflictions, but cannot eradicate them from the root. Wisdom can eradicate afflictions from the root, which is more superior than meditation, so wisdom is explained after it. To show the three reasons, it is said, "Because of the large and the small." What is large and coarse is explained first, and what is small and difficult is explained later. Giving is coarse and easy, so it is explained first. Therefore, morality is subtle, so it is explained later. Meditation is coarse, so it is explained earlier. Therefore, wisdom is subtle, so it is explained later. "Coarse" means easy to enter and easy to practice, and subtle means difficult to enter and difficult to practice. Among them, giving is easy to do, just like kings and ministers giving alms.

Even outcasts and Shudras can practice generosity, but they cannot keep the precepts, so generosity is easy, and precepts are difficult. Precepts merely refrain from harming the lives and property of others, so they are easy, while patience, even if one's own life and property are harmed, does not retaliate, so patience is difficult. Patience merely refrains from retaliating against those who harm oneself and endures, so it is easy, while diligence goes even further than that, constantly practicing virtue, so it is difficult. Diligence merely engages in virtue constantly, but it does not destroy afflictions, so it is easy, while meditation can destroy afflictions, so it is difficult. Meditation merely destroys afflictions, so it is easy, while wisdom can understand the truths of the noble ones and other dharmas, so it is difficult. In the verses of "Discriminating the Definitive Words," after explaining the meaning of the order, now the definitive words of the six perfections are explained, from the meaning of "Why is it called generosity" to "Why is it called wisdom." The meaning of "abandoning poverty" is that in the Indian language, generosity is called "Dana" (梵文天城体:Dana,梵文罗马拟音:dāna,汉语字面意思:generosity), and its meaning is that "Da" (梵文天城体:Da,梵文罗马拟音:da,汉语字面意思:giving) means poverty, and "Na" (梵文天城体:Na,梵文罗马拟音:na,汉语字面意思:not) means abandoning or eliminating. Brahmins and merchants, etc., whatever food and clothing they lack, are given to them, so that the recipients have no poverty and lack in this life, therefore it is called abandoning poverty. The giver abandons external and internal possessions in this life, and will never be poor in future lives, and will become fully endowed with enjoyment, therefore it is called generosity. The meaning of "obtaining coolness" is that in the Indian language, precepts are called "Shila" (梵文天城体:Śīla,梵文罗马拟音:śīla,汉语字面意思:precepts), "Shi" (梵文天城体:Śī,梵文罗马拟音:śī,汉语字面意思:coolness) means coolness, and "La" (梵文天城体:La,梵文罗马拟音:la,汉语字面意思:obtaining) means obtaining or receiving. Those who possess precepts will not, in this life, be attached to worldly things, and will not, through the body and speech, engage in various actions that cause suffering from greed and hatred, etc., nor will they suffer the pain of evil destinies in future lives because of this.
