What should be done? If one becomes a Buddha, there will be no birth, aging, sickness, and death, etc. Therefore, one is also saved from all the afflictions of life. This is the meaning of that. This verse shows that oneself becomes one's own refuge, and therefore shows that becoming a Buddha is itself the refuge. Now, because the Buddha can also provide five kinds of protection to other beings, it is the supreme refuge. "From harms and all harms," etc., one verse is mentioned. Among them, saving from all harms means that by the blessing of the Tathagata, the blind regain their sight, the deaf hear sounds, the mad regain their memory, and various internal phenomena and bad years are pacified, etc. This is one way of saving others. "Evil destinies and" etc. indicate saving from evil destinies. That is, the Tathagata emits light, touches the bodies of sentient beings in evil destinies such as hell, pacifies all the sufferings of evil destinies, and causes them to be reborn in the heavens. For those who want to be reborn in evil destinies, the light touches them and prevents them from being reborn in evil destinies. This is the second way of saving others. "Non-paths and" etc. indicate saving from non-paths. There are various views of non-Buddhists, such as lying on ashes to seek liberation and heaven, lying on thorns to seek liberation and heaven, and jumping off cliffs to seek liberation and heaven. These cannot obtain liberation and heaven from them, so they are called non-paths. Causing those non-Buddhists who have entered non-paths to abandon the evil path and placing them on the path to heaven, the ten virtuous actions, and the path to liberation—the eightfold noble path—this is the third way of saving others. "Ruinous aggregates" etc. indicate saving from the view of ruinous aggregates. Clinging to the five aggregates, which are without self and what belongs to self, as self and what belongs to self, this is the view of ruinous aggregates. For those sentient beings who have the view of ruinous aggregates, the Dharma of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, i.e., the absence of self in the person, is proclaimed, and they are placed in the extinction of suffering of the Hearers. This is called saving from ruinous aggregates. This is the fourth way of saving others. "From the Lesser Vehicle" etc. indicate saving from the Lesser Vehicle, i.e., from the uncertain...

Those with lineage, if they enter the Hearer Vehicle, or wish to enter, causing them to return from that and establishing them in the Great Vehicle, this is called saving from the vehicle. This is the five kinds of saving from other places. Therefore, the so-called "refuge is supreme" is because it also provides five kinds of refuge for other sentient beings, therefore, achieving Buddhahood is the meaning of supreme refuge, unsurpassed refuge. That is explained with three verses, because refuge is incomparable, and it is supreme, because it is a refuge of the world and beyond the world, so it is also an unsurpassed refuge, as shown in the first and second verses above, with two meanings showing the meaning of unsurpassed. Therefore, it is said, "Buddha refuge is incomparable and supreme," etc., one verse. Becoming a Buddha itself becomes the place of self and others, so it is the refuge of the Buddha. The refuge of the Buddha and this refuge are similar, and as such, it is impossible to measure in any place in the world, so it is called incomparable. Worldly people take refuge in mountains, etc., and Hearers take refuge in Nirvana, compared to that, this refuge is supreme, so it is called supreme, therefore it is an unsurpassed refuge. How is it unsurpassed, therefore it mentions birth and death, becoming a Buddha can protect from all birth and death. Why is that? Because after becoming a Buddha, there will be no birth, old age, sickness, etc., this shows saving from all the afflictions of life. The so-called affliction, becoming a Buddha can protect from afflictions. The so-called from all evil destinies, that is, protecting from all afflictions of karma. Why is that? Because after becoming a Buddha, one will not commit the five heinous crimes and the ten non-virtuous deeds, etc., this shows saving from all the afflictions of karma. Those words show the transformation from becoming a Buddha to becoming my refuge. In order to show that when I become a Buddha, I also become the refuge of others, therefore it is said, "various fears transform," etc., the Buddha is fear.
