Commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras, by Mati Sthira. Commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras Mati Sthira. In Sanskrit: Sūtra Alaṃkāra Vṛtti Bhāṣyaṃ. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras. Homage to the noble Mañjuśrī! The Three Jewels, the treasure of treasures, The true Śākya, the foremost of the Sugata's sons, The Victorious One, the supreme leader of beings, And the brother of the unattached son, I have faith in. The treatise that illuminates and makes visible to beings, The principal lama from whom I heard this, Always and in all ways, I rely on them, With reverence and respect, I bow my head. Thinking about the meaning, my intellect is dull, And the words and meaning of this treatise are profound, The thought of commentary has not arisen in me, Therefore, for my own benefit, I will do a little. The essence of the Great Vehicle's Ornament of the Sutras is, in short, that a Bodhisattva abiding in the lineage, having generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, should train in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and this treatise teaches that. Regarding "abiding in the lineage," lineage refers to the seed for attaining unsurpassed enlightenment. It is also called lineage, basis, proximate dependence, cause, steadfastness, place, and antecedent. These are synonyms for lineage. Lineage, in brief, is of two types: naturally abiding and genuinely accomplishing. Among these, the naturally abiding lineage is not the distinction of the birthplaces of Bodhisattvas that is immediately obtained, but rather it has come down through one from another since beginningless samsara, obtained by the nature of reality. Possessing this, Bodhisattvas have the potential to attain unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. The genuinely accomplishing lineage refers to those with an undetermined lineage who, by relying on a virtuous friend and having previously familiarized themselves with the roots of virtue, have become a lineage determined by karma. In this context, it is appropriate to refer to both. Among these, the naturally abiding lineage is that whose fruit has not been accomplished and has not arisen. The fruit of the lineage is generating the mind of enlightenment and the pāramitās.

Sixth is the practice. If one has not generated the mind of enlightenment and has not entered into the practice of the perfections, then one is not considered to have the lineage, therefore it is subtle. The lineage of true practice is called coarse because it has fruits. In relation to the nature lineage, it is not just profound and subtle, therefore it is called coarse. Bodhisattvas who possess this lineage are superior even to Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, let alone other ordinary beings. Therefore, this lineage is unsurpassed and supreme. Why is that? Because these two, in short, are to be purified, that is, to be purified from the obscuration of afflictions and to be purified from the obscuration of knowledge. Among them, those with the lineage of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are only purified from the obscuration of afflictions, but not from the obscuration of knowledge. Bodhisattvas with the lineage are liberated from both the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge. Therefore, it should be known as supreme and unsurpassed. Furthermore, in four ways, it can be known that Bodhisattvas surpass Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. What are these four ways? They are faculties, diligence, wisdom, and fruit. Among them, the difference in faculties is that Bodhisattvas are naturally sharp in their faculties, Pratyekabuddhas are naturally medium in their faculties, and Shravakas are naturally inferior in their faculties. The difference in diligence is that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas enter into practice for the sake of benefiting and bringing happiness to themselves. Bodhisattvas enter into practice for the sake of benefiting themselves, as well as benefiting others, benefiting many sentient beings, bringing happiness to many sentient beings, having compassion for the world, and for the sake of the benefit, happiness, and welfare of many gods and humans. Therefore, for them, the difference in wisdom is that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are only proficient in the aggregates, elements, sense bases, as well as dependent origination, what is and is not, and the truth, while Bodhisattvas are proficient in all five sciences. The difference in fruit
