Therefore, dedicating whatever is heard, for the benefit of oneself and others, to the benefit of sentient beings, is to manifestly act for the benefit of sentient beings. To prevent intolerance towards sentient beings, verses are spoken, meaning that when Bodhisattvas perform beneficial deeds for sentient beings in samsara, even if they assess the benefits, it may instead cause harm, and there may be beatings or defilements inflicted upon the Bodhisattvas. It is not appropriate to be intolerant towards those who contemplate such situations, but rather to accept them willingly. To show this reason, verses are composed, which is the meaning of the verses. The verse says: 'Constantly without freedom, faults arise from the mind, sentient beings commit sins, the wise should not be angry.' The meaning of this verse is: Bodhisattvas possess wisdom and compassion. With wisdom, even if sentient beings cause harm to Bodhisattvas, those sentient beings are under the control of desire, hatred, and ignorance, and are constantly without freedom. They commit sins such as beating and binding Bodhisattvas, not because they have control over their minds. Having understood this, they regard it as the fault of the afflictions, not the fault of sentient beings. This is its meaning. The verse says: 'Unwillingly they do it, knowing it is sentient beings, compassion increases.' The meaning of this verse is: The great compassion of Bodhisattvas increases. For example, on the battlefield, going to war that harms both oneself and others is under the control of lords and kings, going unwillingly. Similarly, these sentient beings who cause harm are also controlled by desire, ignorance, and hatred, and commit sins unwillingly. Having understood this, they regard them as objects of compassion, not thinking of retaliation. This is its meaning. The above extensively explains the practice of Bodhisattvas. The verses on the greatness of practice, that is, now with one verse, the meaning of practice is briefly summarized, and also the great nature of the practice of Bodhisattvas is explained. The great nature is the greatness of overcoming, and transcending Nirvana,

Great is the increase of merit, and great is the non-abandonment of all beings. The phrase "subduing all sentient beings in samsara" shows the greatness of subduing. Samsara refers to the three realms. The word "samsara" refers to suffering beings. If a Bodhisattva, with his great abode, great activity, great fruit of practice, and abiding, can subdue all sentient beings in the three realms and with the five consciousnesses, he can place them in the city of non-abiding Nirvana, that is its meaning. Why are sentient beings nourished by desire and other afflictions in the three realms? Although Bodhisattvas abide in the three realms, they are not tainted by the faults of the three realms because they understand that all dharmas are empty. Therefore, subduing the three realms is what it means. "This practice leads to the supreme peace." This sentence shows the greatness of Nirvana. The word "this practice" refers to aiming at the practice of great abode, great activity, and great fruit. If one abides in this practice, one can go to non-abiding Nirvana, therefore it is called going to the supreme peace. "It increases many kinds of qualities." This sentence shows the greatness of the increase of qualities. If one abides in this practice, hearing the qualities of strength, fearlessness, non-mixing, etc., one can increase many qualities, so it is said. "With a compassionate mind, constantly gather beings." This sentence shows the greatness of completely not abandoning beings. If one abides in this practice, Bodhisattvas with compassion, with a compassionate mind, will not abandon beings even to the end of samsara, that is its meaning. As it is said in the Prajnaparamita Sutra: "Subhuti, if form becomes real and is not unreal, then this Mahayana will not arise having subdued the world including gods, humans, and asuras." The meaning of this sentence is this: If these dharmas such as form are truly established as the childish beings say and as the senses perceive, then these are existent and not non-existent.
