The mind of enlightenment with five kinds of conviction is like a wish-fulfilling jewel. Like the sun, it illuminates others. As for "Like the sun, it illuminates others," combining it with the four objects of gathering, the mind of enlightenment with the four objects of gathering should be understood as being like the sun. For example, just as the sun ripens various kinds of crops, similarly, generosity, sweet speech, beneficial conduct, and concord also gather sentient beings and ripen them. How so? For the miserly, they are gathered by generosity and placed in virtue. For the hateful, they are gathered by sweet speech and placed in virtue. For the ignorant, they are gathered by beneficial conduct and placed in virtue. For the arrogant, they are gathered by concord and placed in virtue. Therefore, the mind of enlightenment, which is like the objects of gathering, is like the sun. As for "Like the music of a Gandharva," for example, when sentient beings hear the beautiful and gentle music of a Gandharva, joy and happiness arise in their minds. Similarly, with the four correct understandings of dharma, meaning, definitive words, and eloquence, one preaches the dharma to sentient beings in their respective languages, according to their wishes for dharma and meaning, making them joyful and content. Therefore, the mind with the four correct understandings is like the music of a Gandharva. As for "Like a king," the word "other" refers to the four reliances. The mind of enlightenment with the four reliances should be understood as being like a king. How so? A king can be a cause of exhaustion and a cause of non-exhaustion. If one relies on him well, he can bestow power and wealth, becoming a cause of non-exhaustion. If one relies on him poorly, he can endanger power and life, becoming a cause of exhaustion. Similarly, relying on individuals, letters, sutras of provisional meaning, and consciousness becomes a cause of exhaustion, while relying on dharma, meaning, sutras of definitive meaning, and wisdom becomes a cause of non-exhaustion. As for "Like a treasury," the mind of enlightenment, which is like a collection of merit and wisdom, is

Like a treasure trove. How so? Just as a treasure trove contains various things such as grains and wealth, the Bodhicitta that possesses the accumulation of merit also possesses immeasurable accumulations of merit; the Bodhicitta that possesses the accumulation of wisdom also possesses immeasurable accumulations of wisdom, therefore it is like a treasure trove. The so-called "great path" means that the Bodhicitta that possesses the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment is like a great path. How so? On the great path, beings of the three times can travel, and kings, ministers, and subjects can also travel. Similarly, the Buddhas, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas of the past also passed into Nirvana from this path. The Buddhas, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas of the present also pass into Nirvana from this path. The Buddhas, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas of the future will also pass into the state of Nirvana from this path, therefore it is like a great path. The so-called "similar to that, so is the other" means that just as the above explanation combines the arisen (Bodhi)citta with metaphors, similarly, the meaning is that the arising of Bodhicitta from below will also be explained in conjunction with metaphors. The so-called "should be known as a vehicle" means that the Bodhicitta that possesses Shamatha and Vipassana should be known as being like a vehicle. For example, just as vehicles such as horses, elephants, and carts carry loads and go to the place where they are to go, similarly, the mind that possesses the union of Shamatha and Vipassana can also easily carry the burden of the benefit of oneself and others and go to the state of Nirvana, therefore it is like a vehicle. The so-called "arising mind like a spring" means that "spring" refers to the characteristics of a water spring. The Bodhicitta that possesses Dharani and eloquence is like a special water spring. How so? For example, just as a special water spring can both accumulate the water that flowed out earlier from the spring and also cause the water that did not flow out earlier to flow out continuously, similarly, Dharani can prevent the Dharma and meaning that were previously heard from

It causes forgetting, while wisdom enables the understanding of previously unheard Dharma and meaning. Even if explained for eons, wisdom will not be exhausted, like a treasure. Like the sound of joy, etc. Regarding this, the Bodhicitta endowed with the four Dharma seals is like the sound of joy. How so? Some sentient beings, separated from relatives and wealth, remain unhappy. If someone says they will meet with relatives and wealth, speaking pleasant words and causing joy to arise in their minds, similarly, those who desire to attain Nirvana and liberation, upon hearing the sound of "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all contaminated phenomena are suffering, all phenomena are without self, and peace is Nirvana," are satisfied as if by nectar, and joy arises in their minds. Therefore, the four Dharma seals are the same as the sound of joy. Like the flow of a great river, etc. Regarding this, the Bodhicitta endowed with the one path of travel is like the flow of a river. How so? For example, a river naturally accomplishes itself without effort, similarly, at the eighth Bhumi, having obtained forbearance of the unarising of phenomena, non-conceptual wisdom naturally accomplishes itself, and one can perfect the Buddha's Dharma oneself, and to perfect sentient beings, it naturally accomplishes itself without effort, therefore it is like the flow of a river. The mind generated by the sons of the Buddhas is well shown to be like a cloud. Regarding this, the Bodhicitta of the sons endowed with skillful means is shown to be like a cloud. For example, from a great cloud arise various worldly riches such as the earth and crops, similarly, from the Bodhicitta endowed with skillful means, which combines skillful means and wisdom, also arise everything from showing the transference from the Tushita heaven to showing Nirvana, and various Dharmas that become worldly and transworldly, heavenly realms and Nirvana, therefore it is like a cloud. Therefore, thus endowed with qualities. As explained above, the examples, etc.
