Just as countless varieties of things arise, so too, for a Bodhisattva who possesses discipline and generates the mind of enlightenment, immeasurable precious qualities such as the ground, the perfections, the aspects of enlightenment, powers, and fearlessness arise. Therefore, the mind of enlightenment that possesses discipline is like a source of jewels. The meaning of "others are like the ocean" is that "others" here refers to the perfection of patience. It should be understood that the mind of enlightenment that possesses the perfection of patience is like the ocean. For example, even if the ocean is stirred up by boats, fish, crocodiles, and so on, it does not become turbid. Similarly, the Bodhisattva's mind of enlightenment that possesses patience, even if stirred up by cold, heat, hunger, thirst, and harm caused by others, does not give rise to the turbidity of anger. Therefore, the mind of enlightenment that possesses patience is like the ocean. The meaning of "like a vajra" is that the mind of enlightenment that possesses diligence is like a vajra. Why? For example, a vajra cannot be destroyed by anything. Similarly, the Bodhisattva's mind of enlightenment that possesses diligence cannot be destroyed by the weapon of laziness. Therefore, the mind of enlightenment that possesses diligence is like a vajra. The meaning of "like Mount Meru" is that the mind of enlightenment that possesses meditation should be understood as being like Mount Meru. Why? Just as the king of mountains, Mount Meru, is not moved by any of the winds from the four directions, so too, the Bodhisattva's mind that possesses single-pointed concentration is not moved by the wind of distracting thoughts. Therefore, the mind of enlightenment that possesses meditation is like Mount Meru. The meaning of "like the king of medicines" is that the mind of enlightenment that possesses the perfection of wisdom should be understood as being like the king of medicines. Why? For example, the king of medicines, through seeing, holding, tasting, and touching, can also pacify all diseases caused by phlegm, bile, and wind. Similarly, the perfection of wisdom also pacifies afflictions and objects of knowledge through the means of listening, thinking, and meditating.

Since it pacifies all the diseases of karmic obscurations, the mind endowed with the Perfection of Wisdom is like the king of medicines. Recognize others as great friends. As it is said, "Recognize others as great friends," the mind of Bodhichitta endowed with the four immeasurables should be recognized as being like a great friend. How so? For example, a great friend is a friend in all three times: a friend in times of happiness, a friend in times of suffering, and a friend in times that are neither happiness nor suffering. Similarly, the mind of Bodhichitta endowed with the four immeasurables never abandons sentient beings at any time. It does not abandon sentient beings in times of happiness, nor does it abandon sentient beings in times of suffering, nor does it abandon sentient beings in times of both happiness and suffering. How so? With compassion, it does not abandon sentient beings in times of suffering, because it causes sentient beings to be liberated from suffering. With loving-kindness, it does not abandon sentient beings even in times of happiness, because it causes sentient beings to be established in happiness. With joy, it does not abandon sentient beings in times of happiness, because it rejoices that sentient beings are always endowed with happiness. With equanimity, it does not abandon sentient beings in times of both happiness and suffering. How so? It thinks, "May sentient beings not become attached when happiness arises," and "May they not become filled with hatred in times of suffering." Like a wish-fulfilling jewel. As it is said, "Like a wish-fulfilling jewel," the mind of Bodhichitta endowed with the five superknowledges should be known to be like a wish-fulfilling jewel. For example, from a wish-fulfilling jewel, whatever one thinks of, such as food and clothing, arises. Similarly, like accomplishment, with miraculous superknowledge, the miraculous eye, the miraculous ear, knowing the minds of others, remembering former lives, and knowing death and rebirth, one can also transform the body into various forms, see the forms of sentient beings, hear sounds, know the minds of others, know the past, know the future, and so on. Whatever one thinks of is accomplished, therefore it is superknowledge.
