Because of understanding, one obtains a mind equal to the Buddha, therefore, in the Sutra of Ten Grounds, it is also said, "I have become close to the Buddha ground," thereby generating great joy, and, "I will be able to see all the Tathagatas and be close to them," thereby generating great joy. "I will truly appear in the realm of all the Tathagatas," thereby generating great joy, just like this. In order to show that the ultimate Bodhicitta has six meanings, it is said: Birth is vast and joyful, thought is also extremely pure, proficient in the remainder and knowing, is the nature of arising. Thus it is declared. The six meanings are the meaning of birth, the meaning of vastness, the meaning of joy, the meaning of extremely pure thought, the meaning of proficiency in the remainder, and the meaning of the nature of arising. Showing from where the Bodhicitta arises, this is the meaning of birth. The Shravakas generate the mind for their own benefit, while the Bodhisattvas generate the mind for the benefit of themselves and others, therefore they possess the meaning of vastness. The Shravakas are happy to act for their own benefit, the Bodhisattvas are happy to act for the benefit of themselves and others, therefore they possess the meaning of joy. The Shravakas only purify the afflictive obscurations and obtain their own Bodhi fruit, while the ground of the Bodhisattvas is that after purifying both the afflictive obscurations and the cognitive obscurations, they know that they will obtain unsurpassed Bodhi, therefore they possess the meaning of extremely pure thought. The Shravakas are only proficient in obtaining the Stream-enterer fruit, the Once-returner fruit, the Non-returner fruit, and the Arhat fruit, while the Bodhisattvas are proficient in the initial attainment, and the nature and qualities of the grounds from the second ground upwards to the tenth ground downwards, and are proficient in how to obtain the higher grounds, therefore they possess the meaning of proficiency in the remainder. Completing the first ground and abandoning it to enter the second ground is called possessing the meaning of the nature of arising. So, how is the first ground abandoned? Because in the first ground, the perfection of generosity is completed, and one can see the faces of hundreds of Tathagatas, etc., possessing hundreds of thousands of qualities.

One should also contemplate on vastness. All of these are merely mind. Knowing that it arises from conceptualization, and abandoning the contemplation and the mind-only, abiding in non-conceptualization, one should know that in this way, one abandons the first ground and enters the second ground. In order to extensively explain the meaning of birth, it is said in just one sentence, "Faith in the Dharma is the seed," and so on. Regarding this, the meaning of birth should also be understood as four types: the difference of the seed, the difference of the mother, the difference of the womb, and the difference of the nurse. Among these, since the mind of enlightenment is generated from faith and belief in the profound and vast Dharma of the Great Vehicle, therefore faith in the Dharma is the seed. In the phrase "Born from the supreme mother, the supreme transcendent mother," the supreme transcendence is the transcendence of wisdom, that is, the transcendence of wisdom that understands the emptiness of all phenomena. Since the ultimate mind of enlightenment arises from the transcendence of wisdom that understands the emptiness of all phenomena, therefore the mother is the transcendence of wisdom. Therefore, in the "Holy Vimalakirti Sutra," it is also said: "For Bodhisattvas, skillful means are the father, and the mother is the transcendence of wisdom." In the "Samadhiraja Sutra," it is also said: "Equal to space, free from dust, possessing a supreme form, without body, without name, son of wisdom, possessing compassion, a treasure of extremely profound qualities, incomparable, please place your hand on the crown of my head." The phrase "Abiding in the womb of meditative bliss" means that just as a womb free from diseases such as bile and phlegm is blissful, so too is the meditation that has abandoned all harm from conceptualization, a blissful womb for the mind of enlightenment. Why? Because with the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind, meditation exists, and as it truly is, wisdom arises, therefore meditation is spoken of as being like a womb. The phrase "Compassion nurtures like a loving mother" means that just as a loving mother protects her child from falling into a cliff and an unpleasant place, so too does great compassion protect the mind of enlightenment from falling into the cliff of the Hearer's cessation of suffering, therefore great compassion is like a loving mother. In order to explain the vast meaning in detail, what should be widely known is the great aspiration.

In order to accomplish the ten (vows), such words were spoken. In the first ground, for the sake of oneself and others, one accomplishes and initiates the ten great vows, therefore one should understand that the mind of enlightenment is vast. The ten vows are also the first of the ten grounds, because the Bodhisattva abides in the Joyful Ground, and in this way accomplishes the great vows, great diligence, and great accomplishments. In this way, for all the Buddhas without remainder, for the sake of offering and service, with great devotion that is complete with all excellent aspects, completely purified, and so on, has been proclaimed. In order to extensively show the meaning of joy, one should understand that joy is: practicing difficult deeds, without weariness for a long time. Thus it is said, because in the three countless eons, for the benefit of sentient beings, there is no weariness at all in giving away heads, hands, feet, etc., which are difficult practices, therefore one should understand that the true mind of enlightenment is endowed with joy. In order to extensively show the meaning of completely pure intention, approaching enlightenment, and because one has obtained its means and wisdom, one should understand that intention is pure. Such words were spoken, from the beginning of obtaining the first ground, because one is close to obtaining the Buddha ground, one should also understand that intention is completely pure. Therefore, from the first ground, I have approached the Buddha ground, so great joy arises, thus it was proclaimed. Furthermore, one also understands the cause and means by which one can obtain the Buddha ground, therefore one should also understand that intention is completely pure. Therefore, from the first ground, one is able to remember and rejoice in entering the means of the wisdom of all the Tathagatas, thus it was proclaimed. In order to show the meaning of understanding the remaining grounds, one is understanding of the other grounds. Such words were spoken, when abiding in the first ground, one is also understanding of what the nature and qualities are of the second ground and above, and the tenth ground and below. Because one understands the means of how to obtain the second ground and above, it is called understanding the remaining grounds. In order to extensively show the meaning of arising, one should understand that arising is: as one abides in equipoise, when attending to the mind, one knows it by merely observing, and also does not discriminate.
