Ground, non-reliance, complete non-contradiction, and inexhaustibility. This word, because it teaches the Dharma that leads to Nirvana, and is the cause of attaining Nirvana, is called approaching the city. This word, possessing the power to destroy heretics, and possessing the merit of being gentle and pleasant. Because definite words and beautiful letters arise, it is called completely clear. This word, even when listened to, is easy to understand, so it is called completely knowing. Because it teaches both Dharma and meaning, it is called worthy of being heard. Because it is not attached to profit and respect, it is called non-reliance. Because even when speaking, only speaks of remembrance and necessary matters, it is called completely non-contradictory. Because it produces unwavering courage and a method of inexhaustible courage, it is called inexhaustible. Thus, the word possessing eight branches, in short, should be understood to possess three qualities. The three qualities are: dependence, nature, and combination. Among them, the word approaching the city shows dependence, because this word is spoken based on attaining Nirvana. Possessing power and merit, and being completely clear, these two show nature. The rest show combination. To show how the root is pure. The so-called pure root means that the combination of words and letters, etc., should be done extensively. Because the combination of words and letters, etc., has eight branches, it is called the pure root. The eight branches are: combining with words and letters, being in accordance with reason, following elimination, being mutually consistent, guiding, being worthy of receiving, being proficient, and the collection of branches of skillful explanation. Among them, because the order of words, letters, and names, etc., is explained without confusion of top and bottom, it is called combining with words and letters. Or, combination refers to reason, that is, the reason for accomplishing actions, the related reason, the reason for establishing reasons, and the reason for the nature of Dharma. Because it teaches words and letters possessing four kinds of reason, it is called combining with words and letters.
