The merit of lineage is the meaning of praise. The explanation of the chapter on lineage is complete. After the chapter on lineage, why explain the chapter on generating the mind of enlightenment? After explaining the lineage above, because the extremely vast merit of the Bodhi tree grows, it is dense, comfortable, and able to carefully observe suffering, for the sake of benefiting oneself and others to obtain fruit, like a good root, this lineage is the most supreme. It is said that like a good root and the good root itself, it is the perfection of one's own benefit. It has vast branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, so it becomes the object of enjoyment for many sentient beings, so it is said to be the perfection of the benefit of others. Similarly, if there is a lineage that abides in its own nature, Bodhisattvas will accomplish the benefit of both themselves and others. However, to achieve these two benefits, it is not enough to merely have a lineage, one must rely on the lineage and cultivate through the stages of generating the mind of enlightenment, etc., in order to achieve one's wishes. If one does not generate the mind of enlightenment, one will not be able to achieve it. For generating the mind of enlightenment, etc., if there is also a lineage, then the wish will be fulfilled, because whoever has a lineage will undoubtedly generate the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment, therefore, after the chapter on lineage, explaining the chapter on generating the mind of enlightenment is related. Or, the nature of generating the mind of enlightenment is like this, having the characteristic of making aspirations. Making aspirations is also because one desires to attain unsurpassed enlightenment and desires to benefit sentient beings, the method of benefiting sentient beings is to obtain the Buddhahood of unsurpassed enlightenment. Therefore, in order to become a method of benefiting sentient beings, if one cultivates unsurpassed enlightenment, then one must cultivate through the stages of generating the mind of enlightenment, etc. Among them, if one generates the mind of enlightenment with the power of possessing a lineage, then that sentient being will become a non-retrogressing Dharma, in order to show this reason, so explaining the chapter on generating the mind of enlightenment after the lineage is related. A verse called the characteristic of generating the mind of enlightenment, in order to show the nature in the characteristic of the mind of enlightenment, so compose this verse.

That is the meaning of this. Great enthusiasm and great effort. Great meaning and great gain. Bodhisattva is a hero, for the sake of two benefits and the generation of the mind. As it is said, the characteristic of the mind of enlightenment is the characteristic of great enthusiasm, the characteristic of great effort, the characteristic of great meaning, the characteristic of great gain, and the characteristic of focusing on two benefits. Thinking, "I will accomplish all of the above," it arises from the mind of generating this thought, hence it is called a hero, and the nature of the mind's movement is called generation of the mind. Great enthusiasm is to listen to the profound and vast Dharma of the Great Vehicle with the armor of diligence, and to realize it through thinking and other means, with a joyful and unwavering mind. And for the sake of sentient beings, in countless eons, giving up heads, hands, feet, etc., with joy and without turning back from practicing such difficult deeds, this first generation of the mind is called great enthusiasm. Great effort is to generate the armor of diligence in this way, and as one has put on armor and made a commitment, with the diligence of application, as one has put on armor, and as one has committed, in order to realize the profound and vast Dharma, one engages in listening to the Dharma and cultivating thought. For the sake of sentient beings, one strives to accomplish the six perfections and various difficult deeds, hence it is called great effort. That generation of the mind is also for the purpose of accomplishing one's own perfect benefit, and for the purpose of accomplishing the perfect benefit of others, hence it is of great meaning. Having generated the mind in this way, one ultimately obtains the fruit of unsurpassed enlightenment, hence it is called great gain. That mind of enlightenment is also the nature of the mind's movement and agitation, arising from the mind, hence it is stirred by what is called the mind, and the mind of enlightenment is generated, hence it is called the mind of a Bodhisattva, that is, the mind of enlightenment is the generation of the mind called a hero, that is the meaning of this. If asked, from what does the mind of enlightenment arise, it arises from focusing on two benefits, the two benefits being focusing on oneself obtaining great enlightenment, and doing what is beneficial and happy for sentient beings.
