Habit refers to the Bodhisattva who abides in the lineage of self-nature. When a qualified virtuous friend guides them to generate the unsurpassed Bodhicitta and enables them to practice the Bodhisattva conduct, it is then called the habituated lineage. Alternatively, those with a definite lineage are called abiding in self-nature. Those with an indefinite lineage, who are guided by a virtuous friend and determined to be of the Mahayana lineage, are called habituated. Or, those of the Bodhisattva lineage who, from the beginning, only enter the Bodhisattva conduct are called abiding in self-nature. Those of the Bodhisattva lineage who practice the Hearer's conduct, and then, through the influence of a virtuous friend, are enabled to practice the Bodhisattva conduct, are called habituated. For example, just as the earth is the place where sentient beings abide, and sentient beings abide on the earth, the lineage that abides in self-nature is the place of the habituated lineage, and the habituated lineage abides therein. Why? Because the habituated lineage arises in reliance on the lineage of self-nature. One should know existence and non-existence. The lineage that abides in self-nature is the cause, and the habituated lineage is the result of this cause. Therefore, when abiding in self-nature, it exists as the nature of the cause, but does not exist as the nature of the result. Because merely abiding in self-nature does not have the result of generating Bodhicitta, etc. The lineage that has become the cause can never be the nature of the result. Relying on this cause, the result of generating Bodhicitta, and the qualities of power and fearlessness, etc., are not impossible to achieve, but can be achieved. The habituated lineage exists as the nature of the cause and also exists as the nature of the result. Why? Because self-nature also exists at this time, so it also exists as the nature of the cause. Because Bodhicitta has also been generated, it also exists as the nature of the result. Qualities are also for the sake of liberation. The term lineage refers to a word that indicates certainty, རྒྱ

In the Indian language, lineage is called "gotra" (Sanskrit Devanagari: गोत्र, Sanskrit Romanization: gotra, Chinese literal meaning: lineage). Merit is called "guna" (Sanskrit Devanagari: गुण, Sanskrit Romanization: guṇa, Chinese literal meaning: merit). "Go" (Sanskrit Devanagari: गो, Sanskrit Romanization: go, Chinese literal meaning: cow) means "guna" (Sanskrit Devanagari: गुण, Sanskrit Romanization: guṇa, Chinese literal meaning: merit), which is the meaning of merit, and "ta" (Sanskrit Devanagari: ता, Sanskrit Romanization: tā, Chinese literal meaning: she) means salvation. This lineage can generate Bodhicitta, and through faith and practice, the stages of the ground, from the ten grounds to the qualities of the Buddha ground are perfected and saved, and can be obtained. Therefore, lineage is referred to as the meaning of merit and salvation. In the "Verses Differentiating Characteristics," from the previously summarized meaning, "characteristics" are mentioned, and here the meaning of characteristics will be explained in detail. For example, just as one infers the existence of fire from the characteristic of smoke appearing, and infers the existence of water from the characteristic of water birds appearing, for the appearance of these four characteristics or signs, in order to show that one has the Bodhisattva lineage, these verses are composed. "Compassion and" is connected with "from the beginning, well combined." "Well combined" refers to actions such as generating Bodhicitta. Before generating Bodhicitta, one distinguishes the realm of sentient beings with five kinds of discrimination, and seeing the suffering of sentient beings, one thinks about how to contemplate the discriminations of these sentient beings. If one has this compassion, one should know that they have the Bodhisattva lineage. This is the first characteristic. "Faith" refers to the profound and vast meaning of the Mahayana Dharma. Even if one does not understand it, merely hearing that the Mahayana Dharma is profound and vast can give rise to faith and understanding characterized by goosebumps and tears. One should know that they have the Bodhisattva lineage. This is the second characteristic. "Patience" refers to generating compassion and, for the benefit of sentient beings, giving away one's head, hands, and feet, and enduring various kinds of hardships such as cold and heat. If one can practice these hardships, one should know that they have the Bodhisattva lineage. This is the third characteristic. "The virtuous lord also practices correctly." Among them, the word "virtuous" refers to the six perfections, that is, liking to give naturally, liking to keep the precepts naturally, and abiding in natural patience.

Liking the earth, naturally liking to initiate diligence, naturally liking to abide in meditation, and naturally having sharp wisdom, one should know that they possess the Bodhisattva lineage. This is the fourth characteristic. The verses called "Distinguishing Lineages" further elaborate on the meanings previously summarized, asking how many types of Bodhisattva lineages there are to show. To show that there are four types of Bodhisattva lineages when distinguished, these verses are composed. Lineages are either definite or indefinite, and either can be taken away or cannot be taken away. The division of lineages by conditions, in short, is fourfold. This means that in short, if the Bodhisattva lineages are distinguished, there are four types: those with definite lineages, those with indefinite lineages, those that can be taken away by conditions, and those that cannot be taken away by conditions. Among these, those with definite lineages are those who are definitely established in the lineage of Shravakas, those who are definitely established in the lineage of Pratyekabuddhas, and those who are definitely established in the lineage of Buddhas. Those who are definitely established in the lineage of Shravakas will only attain the Bodhi of Shravakas through that lineage, and no matter what they do, they will never become the cause for attaining the Bodhi of Pratyekabuddhas or Buddhas. Those with a definite Pratyekabuddha lineage will only attain the Bodhi of Pratyekabuddhas through that lineage, and no matter what they do, they will never become the cause for attaining the Bodhi of Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. Those with the Buddha lineage will only attain the Bodhi of Buddhas through a definite lineage, and no matter what they do, they will never transform into the Bodhi of Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. Those with indefinite lineages transform according to conditions, becoming the cause for any of the lineages of Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, or Buddhas. If they are guided by virtuous friends of Shravakas, they will also transform into those with the Shravaka lineage. If they are guided by virtuous friends of Pratyekabuddhas, they will also transform into those with the Pratyekabuddha lineage. If they are guided by virtuous friends of Bodhisattvas, they will also transform into those with the Buddha lineage. This can also be illustrated with an example: some parts of a mountain, containing soil, stones, etc., will undoubtedly turn into gold, but not into silver or copper.
