If one should not generate hatred towards it, what need is there to mention the body with consciousness? Thus spoke the Bhagavan. If the wise cannot rejoice in the Mahayana, then one should adopt the middle way like a neutral person. Because this way of being like a neutral person is a reason for the wise to rejoice. Therefore, following that reason, is this Mahayana a place for hatred? Or is it a place for faith? One will realize it oneself. If that realization is not accepted, then why is that? What need is there to speak of a Dharma that is doubtful? Thus it is said. If one should not generate hatred even towards an unappealing form, then how much more so should those with consciousness not generate hatred towards this Mahayana, which is uncertain whether it is the word of the Buddha or not, being a place of doubt? What need is there to even mention that it is unreasonable? Therefore, the wise say this: Stretching one's hand into a snake's nest, if there is a snake there, what merit does a child gain from finding it meaninglessly? It is like that. Others also say: With doubt about another world, the wise should abandon non-virtue. If there is no other world, what will happen? If there is or is not, what is lost? Thus it is said. Therefore, placing it in neutrality, there is no good or bad. As said above, hatred itself is a fault by nature. Those who wish not to be stained by that fault of nature should not generate hatred, but should place it in neutrality, which is good. Placing it in neutrality, one will not be stained by the fault of hatred, that is the meaning. The explanation of the chapter on practicing the Mahayana is complete. A summary of the distinctions of taking refuge in verses, wherein taking refuge, generating the mind of enlightenment, and making aspirations have the same meaning. Among them, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas take refuge in the Three Jewels in order to completely liberate themselves from suffering. Indra and Brahma and others take refuge in order to desire worldly enjoyment. For people, they also desire worldly status.

To escape, people take refuge in the king, or when beasts are chased by hunters, they take refuge in mountains and caves to escape danger. However, Bodhisattvas take refuge in the Three Jewels for the sake of their own and others' benefit, thus being more special and superior than others. Taking refuge extensively comes from the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra. Here, only the important meanings are summarized, hence it is called "Abridged." From there, verses are explained. If one asks, what is the connection between explaining the distinctions of taking refuge in the context of accomplishing the vehicle? It was said earlier that those who understand the meaning adorn the Dharma by explaining the meaning. Objection: If the Dharma itself possesses qualities, then what adornment is needed? The answer to this objection is: Forms and natures that are well-endowed enter into a mirror. (Verse) Like this, with one verse, it is shown that this treatise itself is an adornment of meaning. Furthermore, with three examples such as medicine, it is also shown that this Dharma has three qualities. After explaining in this way, then someone wrongly thinks, if this Mahayana is not the word of the Buddha, then what qualities does it have? To correct this error, it is established that this is the Mahayana, not something else. Having established the Mahayana in this way, those who are doubtful and do not understand obtain the distinction of joy and non-joy, recognizing that this Mahayana is the path to Buddhahood, not something else. Therefore, they seek the method of becoming Buddhas and show the order by which one can become a Buddha. That is, by showing the way of the Mahayana, with the order of taking refuge in the Buddha and other Three Jewels, one must seek unsurpassed Bodhi. Now, from the perspective of taking refuge, it is shown how to enter the Dharma. Taking refuge in the way of the Mahayana is the cause of obtaining perfect happiness for oneself and others. Universal approach, commitment, realization, and subjugation.
