It is like this. Why is it said that profound wisdom can lead to liberation? Because only the profound realization of the unborn and unarisen can transcend samsara and attain nirvana. But why can't those logicians who measure things with direct perception and inference, liberate from samsara and attain nirvana? Having thought like that, one should not be afraid of the Mahayana either. Why? Because attaining nirvana by abandoning afflictions is attained by seeing emptiness, but not by the mind of a logician who only speculates on conventional truth. If there is no faith, it will not be accomplished either. There is a verse that says: If those without lineage, Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have faith in entering the Mahayana, then it is proven that this is the Mahayana. Why? Because the lesser ones do not enter into faith in it. To illustrate this, the verse is explained: "Believing in the Lesser Vehicle, the lineage is also extremely inferior, Completely surrounded by bad friends, profoundly and extensively spoken, If there is no faith in the Dharma, then it is established." It means that the Sravakas are content with giving only a handful of food as an accumulation of merit; and as an accumulation of wisdom, they are content with seeing only the absence of self in a person, and they only strive for their own benefit, therefore they believe in the Lesser Vehicle. Thus, because of believing in the Lesser Vehicle, the accumulation of merit and wisdom is also small, therefore they are called extremely inferior in lineage. Because they only have the lineage to attain nirvana in the Lesser Vehicle. For example, just as foxes like to associate with foxes and do not like to associate with lions, their faith is also small. Because the lineage is inferior, even if they associate, they only associate with bad friends who rely on the Sravaka path, therefore they are called surrounded by bad friends. Thus, because faith is small, lineage is inferior, and friends are bad, if there is no faith in the profound and vast Mahayana Dharma, then because the lesser ones do not believe in it, therefore this Dharma is the Dharma of the Mahayana.

Thus it is established. In the verses called "Do not slander the unheard sutras," it says: 'This is the word of the Buddha, this is not,' and 'This is bad, this is good,' etc., it is only after hearing the meaning and words of the scriptures that it is appropriate to praise or slander. Those who have not heard the scriptures do not know what is good or bad, so they cannot slander arbitrarily. Therefore, starting from not slandering the unheard scriptures, the verses are proclaimed. 'By following hearing, one obtains wisdom. Who despises hearing? Why do the foolish determine what is left out of the immeasurable variety of hearing?' The meaning is that you, the disciples of the Hearers' Vehicle, are able to generate the wisdom to know the aggregates, realms, sources, and general characteristics because you previously followed the virtuous spiritual friends and obtained the Dharma, and relied on hearing to obtain learning and wisdom. Since this is the case, now you despise hearing, abandon listening to the Mahayana Dharma, and slander it, which is foolish. Why? Because we have not heard or understood the immeasurable variety of Mahayana scriptures, and when they are left out without hearing, how can we arbitrarily determine 'This is not the word of the Buddha'? This is the meaning to be determined. 'Because hearing has no other power' means that distinguishing good from bad, distinguishing right from wrong, can only rely on the power of hearing, and those who have not heard cannot distinguish. Therefore, one should strive in the Dharma and not slander the unheard Dharma. Whatever is heard should be properly contemplated, and if it is not properly contemplated, it is the fault of improper contemplation, which is what the verses say. One should not slander the unheard Dharma, therefore one should listen to the Dharma. Now, for the heard Dharma, do other-powered and perfectly established natures exist? This should not be arbitrarily distinguished either, and one should contemplate properly. If one does not contemplate properly, one will think that there is no Buddha, no Dharma, etc., and deny everything, which is its meaning. Properly
