It means to generate the mind to take upon oneself the suffering of all sentient beings. The text says, "Whatever actions of love and benefit, and the Bodhisattva's non-abandonment of sentient beings, these are very rare in the world." For example, just as a cow lovingly treats its calf, giving it benefit and happiness without ever tiring, so too, the Bodhisattva treats all sentient beings with love, joy, and compassion, giving them benefit and happiness. Even if sentient beings harm the Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva will not be discouraged or abandon them. Therefore, starting from abiding in meaningless views, up to not abandoning sentient beings, these are the actions of Bodhisattvas in the world, worthy of being praised as rare. The text says, "When sentient beings attain equality with myself, then..." This shows that it is not so surprising. For those who have not attained the mind of equality between self and others, it would be surprising if things like those mentioned above were to occur. For example, it is not so surprising to help oneself and give oneself happiness. Similarly, the Bodhisattva has attained the mind of equality between self and sentient beings, realizing that all sentient beings are the same as oneself, and therefore gives benefit and happiness to all sentient beings. What is so surprising about that? It is not surprising. The text says, "Now, speaking of the greatness of the great Bodhisattva..." This means that it shows the qualities and activities of a Bodhisattva who has attained the first ground, which are teachings worthy of being praised as very rare. The text says, "Whoever regards afflictions as self..." etc. The root of all afflictions such as desire is the view of the perishable aggregate as a view of meaningless nature. Why is it called meaningless? Because the view of the perishable aggregate as the cause of arising in the three realms and the lower realms obstructs the attainment of enlightenment, it is called meaningless. The text says, "The great meaning of the great view is..." etc., further explaining the great view. Whatever I am, all sentient beings are also; whatever all sentient beings are, I am also. There is no difference between sentient beings and myself, they are equal.
