means that. Therefore, it is said to have attained the path of seeing, because it is said at that time. Regarding the phrase "because it is said at that time," when one sees emptiness free from grasping and clinging, thereby abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned, and sees that afflictions have been abandoned, that is the time when one attains the path of seeing, that is its meaning. Furthermore, when one attains the first ground, it is said to know emptiness. Why? Because one knows the three emptinesses. To show that, it is said, "Knowing the emptiness of non-existence," etc. Among them, the nature of the completely conceptualized by the pure worldly wisdom, just as children think that the nature of the earth is hardness, etc., knowing that these are non-existent and empty. Therefore, it is called knowing the emptiness of non-existence. Regarding "such non-existent emptiness," it is connected to "knowing." The nature of other-dependence, just as ordinary childish people think of the nature of what is grasped, is non-existent, but the nature of other-dependence exists, it is said. Therefore, it is called such non-existent emptiness. Regarding "after knowing the emptiness of self-nature," the nature of the perfectly established, from the beginning, is empty of the nature of grasping and clinging, just like the surface of the sky. Knowing that the nature of the perfectly established is empty from the beginning is called knowing the emptiness of self-nature. Regarding "saying knowing emptiness," as mentioned above, at the time of the first ground, because one knows the three emptinesses, it is said to know emptiness, that is its meaning. Regarding "because there is no self-nature," etc., just as the horns of a rabbit and the son of a barren woman, etc., have no self-nature, those with inverted minds who have not seen that, think that the nature of the earth is hardness, etc., and think of grasping and clinging, etc., because those have no nature, knowing that the nature of the completely conceptualized is emptiness is knowing the emptiness of the reality of non-existence, that is its meaning. Regarding "such non-existent emptiness is the emptiness of other-dependence," etc., such non-existent emptiness refers to the emptiness of other-dependence, for example, illusory horses and elephants, etc.

Because it is not the nature of horses and elephants, it is emptiness. Just as there is the nature of stones and wood, for other natures, just like the characteristics of what infants and beings each grasp and hold, there is no other nature, but there is another nature. Knowing it like this is knowing that emptiness is non-existent. The nature of emptiness is that the completely perfect nature is self-empty. It is called the characteristic of perfect accomplishment, which is free from the defilements of grasping and apprehending from the beginning, and whose nature is emptiness. Therefore, the nature of emptiness is the characteristic of suchness. This is also the nature of being free from pervasive calculation, so the nature of emptiness that is free from duality is what Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can each realize for themselves, which is unspeakable, inconceivable, and transcends the realm of speculation. Understanding it like this is knowing self-emptiness. Therefore, in the Mahāyāna Saṃgraha, it is also said: The Dharmakāya is the characteristic of being inconceivable, and this is also the nature of self-nature. Suchness is what each person can realize for themselves, there is no analogy in the world, it transcends the realm of speculation and is known inconceivably. In addition, in the Ārya Ratnamegha Sūtra and other sutras, the principle of explaining the teachings of ultimate truth should be understood in that way as the characteristic of perfect accomplishment. The discriminating thoughts are exhausted, and things are known by their lack of characteristics. It is called, in addition, at the time of the first bhūmi, the meaning of understanding it in this way. In this regard, discriminating thoughts are existence and non-existence, as well as discriminating thoughts such as form and sound, up to nirvāṇa are discriminating thoughts. All discriminating thoughts are exhausted, and suchness, which is free from all discriminating thoughts, refers to the truth of cessation. The word "things" refers to the object of focus. Suchness, the truth of cessation, is focused on by the samādhi without characteristics, and it is known, which is the meaning. That is also the samādhi without characteristics.
