To understand each word of the Sutra section, one must focus on the words themselves. In reality, focusing on the names and words of the Sutra section should be understood as the path of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. This shows focusing on Śamatha. To analyze its meaning in detail, it should be understood as Vipaśyanā. Regarding this, "its meaning" refers to the meaning of all the names and words in the Sutras, which is counting, measuring, analyzing, and thinking, that is, contemplating the self-characteristics and general characteristics of these dharmas, and understanding them correctly and without error, which should be understood as the path of Vipaśyanā. This shows focusing on Vipaśyanā. The path that combines them should be understood as Yuganaddha. Regarding this, when Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are not yet united, they are focused on separately: Śamatha focuses on names and words, and Vipaśyanā focuses on meaning. When Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are united, they do not focus separately on names and meanings, but combine the two into one, and Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are used simultaneously. This path of focus should be understood as the path of Yuganaddha of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. This shows focusing on Yuganaddha. The depressed mind should be fully grasped. Regarding this, when a yogi meditates on Samādhi, if the mind becomes unclear and depressed, the mind should be grasped and uplifted by focusing on the characteristics of Vipaśyanā. How to uplift it? By focusing on the Tathāgata, the merits of Samādhi, and the self-characteristics and general characteristics of dharmas through Vipaśyanā, the mind is uplifted. This shows focusing on the characteristics of grasping. Also, pacify excitement. Regarding this, if one remembers what one has seen and heard before, and the mind is distracted by external objects, excitement should be pacified by focusing on the characteristics of Śamatha. How should one focus on Śamatha? By thinking about the faults of Samsara, such as birth and old age, one should avoid the distraction of the mind. This shows focusing on the characteristics of Śamatha. In what is focused on, after attaining equality, maintain equanimity. Regarding this, the yogi should thus eliminate the depressed mind through Vipaśyanā, and the

When the mind has abandoned calm abiding, and with respect to the object of focus, there is no dullness or excitement, and when the mind has become equanimous, without fabrication, it is placed in equanimity, not attending to the characteristics of calm abiding, nor attending to the characteristics of insight. If one attends to any of these, one will fall away from the mind of equanimity. This shows attending to the characteristic of equanimity. Always and with reverence, also combine with all. As it is said, the yogi attends in between. It is not that one does not attend in between, but that one attends at all times, which is called always. This shows attending to always. From laziness and indifference, diligently and earnestly attending is called reverence. This shows attending to reverence. Thus, always attending and reverently attending, both should also be combined with all the above-mentioned attendings. At the time of the above-mentioned attendings, one should also attend in the manner of always attending and reverently attending. This is the meaning of this. These are the eleven types of attention. In order for the yogi who attends to attention to enter the stage of faith conduct, one should attend to the nine mental abidings. The meaning of the nine mental abidings is shown in four verses. When the mind is placed on the object, as it is said, initially the yogi places the mind in one-pointedness on the object to be focused on with samadhi. How is it placed? The object of focus of samadhi and the mind are to be connected. Initially, connecting the object and the mind is called mental abiding. Because it is constantly not distracted, as it is said, after thus placing the mind in one-pointedness on the object of focus, it shows the mind being distracted by external objects. In order not to be distracted, again and again, constantly placing the mind in one-pointedness, this shows correct abiding. Knowing when scattered, quickly it is withdrawn again, as it is said, thus when the yogi places the mind in one-pointedness in samadhi, if the mind becomes scattered on external objects, then this mind of mine has been scattered on the object.

Having recognized that it has changed, immediately abandon the distracted mind and gather it back again, placing it in one-pointedness, which is called universally abiding. Again and again, the wise should gather the mind inward. This means that a wise Bodhisattva who gathers the mind back from distraction in this way does not let the mind go to external objects, but again and again gathers the mind inward, again and again gathering the mind into one-pointed samadhi. To place, to abide, this is called near abiding. Because of seeing the qualities of samadhi, therefore the mind becomes joyful. This means that if a yogi abides in one-pointedness in samadhi, then if the mind wanders to external objects, the mind will rejoice in external objects and will not rejoice in samadhi. At that time, he should contemplate the qualities of samadhi. If he contemplates the qualities of samadhi, he will see the qualities of samadhi. If he sees the qualities of samadhi, the mind will cease to be displeased, become subdued, and then joy will arise, which shows subduing. Because of seeing the faults of distraction, displeasure will become peaceful. This means that when the yogi's mind is distracted or depressed and drowsy, he will think like this: Because my mind is distracted, I have lost one-pointedness, and my mind has become depressed and drowsy, so I cannot obtain the fruits of dhyana and clairvoyance, etc. Therefore, when a distracted mind arises, one should look at the distracted mind with displeasure and see it as a fault. In order to abandon the distracted mind and displeasure, one should rely on the antidote. By relying on the antidote, he can abandon the displeased mind. Abandoning the displeased mind in this way is called peaceful. When attachment and hatred arise, they are immediately pacified. This means that if a yogi, due to desire, etc., develops an attached mind towards objects of enjoyment, or develops a hateful mind, he should abandon it by cultivating loving-kindness or cultivating displeasure. This shows complete pacification. Therefore, with intentional effort, the mind continuously enters.
