In the phrase "ground," "ascetic" refers to a Bodhisattva yogi. The yogi should first fix his mind on the names of the twelve categories of scriptures, such as the Sutras. How does one fix the mind? For example, knowing that "this Sutra is called the 'Ten Bhumi Sutra,'" "this is the 'Lankavatara Sutra,'" this is the meaning of knowing the names of the Sutras. Then, from the elaboration of words, "gradually analyze." This means that after fixing the mind on the names in this way, one then fixes the mind on the words of the Sutras, from "Thus have I heard, at one time" to the end, knowing how many words appear in a Sutra, and the meaning of all the words. This is also understood gradually, first analyzing the names to understand them, and then analyzing the words to understand the words. Therefore, "with self-awareness, properly analyze its meaning." This means that "self-awareness" is the meaning of understanding properly in the mind. After understanding the words in this way, if the yogi thinks about and analyzes each word of each Sutra, he will understand the meaning of each word without inversion. "Having grasped its meaning," this means that after understanding the meaning of each word in this way, one then determines and understands that the meaning of the words of the Sutra is this and not something else. "Truly gather all dharmas," this means that then the meanings of those Sutras are gathered together and summarized into the Dharma. For example, even if the meanings of the twelve categories of scriptures are gathered together, they are included in the Sutras. Or, for a Sutra, the meaning of this Sutra from beginning to end is briefly summarized as "this is what is to be expressed," or, if the meanings of all the Sutras are gathered together, it is only to explain the Sutra. Summarizing in this way is truly summarizing all dharmas. "Therefore, in order to realize its meaning, then truly hope," this means that "therefore" refers to the mind of the yogi. In order to realize its meaning.

The so-called "I" is for the sake of understanding the meaning of those such as the Sutra Pitaka, within the category of Dharma, entering in order to attain Samadhi oneself, or entering in order to attain the fruit of a Shramana, or even entering in order to understand the Bhumi and Paramitas. For whatever fruit one enters, one should generate a mind of hope for how to attain that fruit, therefore it is said: "Therefore, from then on, truly hope." These three verses show the six minds, the so-called three verses, namely "Therefore, the Dharma categories such as the Sutra Pitaka, etc." is one verse. "From then on, the words unfold," etc., is the second verse. "Grasping its meaning," etc., is the third verse. These three verses show the six minds of a yogi, that is the meaning. The root mind refers to focusing on the names of the Sutra Pitaka Dharmas, after receiving instructions, etc. The so-called root mind, how is it that after a teacher or Khenpo, or a Tathagata, etc., receives the instructions and teachings of the Bhumi, from then on, initially focusing the mind on the names of the Sutra Pitaka, etc., this is called the root mind. Oneself, such as "impermanence" and "suffering," etc., or without receiving instructions and teachings from a Khenpo and teacher, or a Buddha and Bodhisattva, when one initially contemplates the Dharmas with one's own wisdom, properly attending to the nature of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, this is called the root mind. The subsequent searching mind refers to who, focusing on the names of the Sutra Pitaka, etc., follows in order to thoroughly distinguish the words. What is the so-called subsequent searching mind like? A Bodhisattva who, on the very first Bhumi, says that the name of the Sutra Pitaka is such, after focusing on the name of the Sutra Pitaka, then focusing on the respective words of those Sutra Pitakas, knowing what kind of words appear among the words of the Sutra Pitaka, and how many words appear, this is called the following mind.

The mind of conceptualization is the mind that discriminates between things and letters. What is the mind of conceptualization? There are two types: discriminating about things and discriminating about letters. Discriminating about things in the manner of four kinds of things, such as counting, is called discriminating about things. Counting is holding numbers. For example, form is ten sense bases and one aspect. Discriminating about counting is holding the number five, eleven, or six in the mind. That is, form is the five senses and the five objects, and one aspect of the realm of phenomena, plus non-revealing form, which is only eleven, no more and no less. Holding numbers in this way is called thinking about counting. Feeling is the collection of six feelings, and so on. Regarding feeling, from the feeling of eye contact to the feeling of mind contact, there are only six collections of feelings, no more and no less. This kind of thinking is also called thinking about counting. Measuring means not denigrating or exaggerating the counted phenomena, but thinking and holding them equally. Thinking about measuring means that, as mentioned above, counting form as eleven, counting the collection of feelings as six, without denigrating it by saying that form is only ten, and feeling is only a little. Nor exaggerating by saying that form has twelve and feeling has seven, but thinking equally about the number established in a way that does not increase or decrease, is called thinking about measuring. Examining means thinking with valid cognition. Thinking with the three valid cognitions of direct perception, inference, and scripture, thinking that these phenomena are not necessarily true. Why establish form as eleven, and not more, such as twelve, or less, such as ten? This kind of thinking is called examining and thinking. Constant is looking at the meaning of counting, measuring, and examining. Counting has counted numbers such as twelve, measuring has not increased or decreased, examining has determined with reason, the self-characteristics and general characteristics of these phenomena.
