That is the meaning. Bodhisattvas have great love for sentient beings from the depths of their bones. This means that when a bodhisattva is doing things for sentient beings, when love and compassion arise for sentient beings, it is as if love and compassion penetrate deep into the bones, touching the essence of the bones. Because they always benefit sentient beings, just like treating an only child. This means that such love is like parents having an only child, and the parents have special love and compassion for the child. Bodhisattvas also have special love and compassion for sentient beings, and love penetrates deep into the bones. If one benefits sentient beings, even with attachment, it will not become a fault. This means that the attachment mentioned here refers to the loving mind that regards sentient beings as lovable. From such a loving mind, only benefit and happiness will arise, so even if one makes a mistake for the sake of sentient beings out of a loving mind, it will not become a fault and will not be regarded as a downfall. Therefore, for the renunciant, the faults arising from attachment will not be regarded as a downfall. For a bodhisattva who is a householder, attachment with the nature of love for children and wives, etc., will also not become a fault. Why? Because attachment does not abandon sentient beings, but rather gathers them, while hatred is the nature of abandoning sentient beings. So, what will cause a bodhisattva to make mistakes and fall? Therefore, it is said: In short, for all sentient beings, his hatred is incompatible. It means that a bodhisattva should treat all sentient beings like an only child. If even a trace of hatred arises for sentient beings, it is contrary to the loving mind, and the bodhisattva will make mistakes and fall because of it. Furthermore, in order to illustrate the love of a bodhisattva, the example of a pigeon is also cited: Just as a pigeon loves its own child, when its own child is hiding, like this, hatred is contradictory, because it is a person who naturally has compassion.

sentient beings. It is said that a Bodhisattva cherishes sentient beings as if they were their own children, like a pigeon. Pigeons are more attached than other birds and love their young very much. From the time they lay eggs until their feathers are fully grown, they cover them with their breasts, bodies, and wings. If one were to harbor even a trace of hatred or displeasure towards such beings, it would be inconsistent and contradictory. Similarly, a Bodhisattva is naturally compassionate, possesses loving-kindness, and regards all sentient beings as their only child. If one were to develop even a slight feeling of hatred towards sentient beings, it would contradict the mind of loving-kindness. That is the meaning. Because of loving-kindness, anger is contradictory. This means, how does anger contradict? Because a Bodhisattva's nature is to abide in loving-kindness towards sentient beings, if one were to develop anger towards sentient beings, it would be somewhat inconsistent. That is the meaning. Because of peace, suffering is contradictory. This means, because a Bodhisattva pacifies all the afflictions of sentient beings, such as desire and hatred, if the Bodhisattva themselves were to allow sentient beings to dwell in the root of all suffering—desire, hatred, and other afflictions—it would be contradictory. That is the meaning. Because of benefiting others, the mind of benefiting oneself is contradictory. This means, a Bodhisattva, for the sake of sentient beings, even gives up their own body and possessions to benefit them. If, with a mind to deceive sentient beings, one were to seize the possessions of sentient beings for one's own benefit, it would be contradictory. That is the meaning. Because of bringing happiness, bringing fear is contradictory. This means, doesn't a Bodhisattva eliminate all the fears of sentient beings and place them in happiness? Bodhisattvas protect sentient beings from all fears, such as enemies and fire. Even seeing the body of a Bodhisattva or hearing their voice eliminates the fears of sentient beings. Having such
