Wala! Even the suffering of sentient beings who dwell in hell at all times will not become an obstacle to the attainment of perfect enlightenment, nor will it become a demonic hindrance, this is the meaning. Clinging to other vehicles, the supreme coolness of self-benefit, even abiding in the supreme bliss, becomes a demonic hindrance. What is meant by this is that for bodhisattvas, this is the hindrance to attaining enlightenment: the thoughts of the hearers and solitary realizers, benefiting oneself and bringing happiness, cooling oneself, clinging to the attainment of nirvana for oneself alone, this becomes a hindrance. To what does it become a hindrance? It becomes a hindrance to abiding in the supreme bliss, that is, it becomes a hindrance to attaining the bliss of non-abiding nirvana, this is the meaning. The four verses for abandoning fear of selflessness and intrinsic purity, that is, saying that phenomena are selfless, and also saying that they appear and are objects of perception, this is a place where children become afraid. Saying that the realm of phenomena is intrinsically pure, and also saying that defilements are pure, this is also a place where children become afraid. In order to abandon this fear, therefore, four verses are composed, this is the meaning. Or, there are three places where children become afraid: if it is said that all phenomena are completely non-existent in every way, this is also a place of fear. If it is said that all phenomena exist and are objects of perception, this is also a place of fear. If it is said that all phenomena are intrinsically pure, but must still be purified later, this is also a place of fear. In order to abandon this fear, therefore, four verses are composed, this is the meaning. The absence of substance of phenomena is an object of perception, afflictions are impermanent and utterly pure. What is meant by this is that saying that the entities of phenomena are non-existent and empty, and then saying that they appear and are objects of perception, this is a place of fear. Children think like this: just as a rabbit's horn is non-existent, but cannot be perceived, so if phenomena are also non-existent, then they cannot be perceived. Therefore, saying that the non-existent is an object of perception, this will become contradictory. Therefore, it is said like this. The realm of phenomena is intrinsically pure, and later afflictions

Saying "it must be purified" is also a cause for fear. Why? Because children might think, "If all dharmas are naturally pure, then why is it necessary to eliminate afflictions?" It should be understood as being like an illusion, like the sky. Regarding this statement, although dharmas have no substance, they can still be objects of perception, which should be understood as being like a cause. For example, although an illusion itself has no object, it can still manifest objects such as horses and elephants. Similarly, although these dharmas have no substance, they can still be objects of perception, such as form and sound. This is its meaning. Although naturally pure, it later becomes pure, like the sky. For example, the sky is naturally pure, but it is obscured by sudden clouds and becomes impure. When the clouds dissipate, it becomes pure again. Similarly, the dharmadhatu is also naturally pure, but it is defiled by sudden afflictions such as attachment, so it needs to be purified. Therefore, there is no contradiction between being naturally pure and later becoming pure. To illustrate that although dharmas have no substance, they can still be objects of perception, the example of a painting is given: Just as a painting is drawn according to ritual, without height or depth, but it still appears. Similarly, the unreal conceptualization, in short, the two are non-existent, but they still appear. Thus it is said. For example, on a cloth, a painter uses various colors to draw various images according to ritual. When touched by hand, there is no height or depth, but when viewed with the eyes, the head, hands, and feet appear to have height and depth. Similarly, the unreal conceptualization, which is characterized by other-powered nature, the grasper and the grasped, are actually non-existent, but they appear as the grasper and the grasped. Therefore, although non-existent, they still appear, like the example of a painting. This is because the third and fourth verses will become similar to the nature of water. Just as muddy water, even though it is clear from the beginning, does not become clear from it. Thus it is said and so on. Just as water that is naturally clear is made muddy by sudden worms and tadpoles. Later, when the muddiness dissipates, it becomes clear again, returning to its naturally clear state.
