What need is there to say about abiding in a place? Therefore, one should abide in a place without sound, this is the meaning. One who has heard well and seen the truth, One who is eloquent and compassionate, An unwearying Bodhisattva, Should be known as a great being. These two verses show the characteristics of a holy person on whom one should rely. Hearing the three baskets of the scriptures, without exception, is called much hearing. Because one understands the four truths of realization, it is called seeing the truth. When teaching the Dharma, one is neither slow nor fast, one composes words appropriately, and teaches well, therefore one is called eloquent. One teaches the Dharma in order to dispel the suffering of sentient beings, without attachment to profit and respect, therefore one is called compassionate. One does not speak at times and not speak at other times, but speaks constantly, therefore one is called unwearying. Such a one is a Bodhisattva, therefore one should know that he is a holy person, this is the meaning. Now, in order to show that with the third verse, one's own true aspiration is grasped by proper attention, Well aimed and well shown, The skillful means of those shown, Well entered and well attained, Is my true aspiration. Thus it is said. True aspiration and I am completely tamed and I am capable, achieving as thought, have the same meaning. Among them, aiming at the three baskets of the Great Vehicle, such as the hundred thousand verses of the Prajnaparamita, is called aiming. Relying on the accumulation of merit and wisdom in previous lives, it is called well relying. When meditating on Samadhi, one meditates on the signs of quiescence, the signs of insight, and the signs of equanimity from time to time, therefore it is called skillful means. Showing these three is my true aspiration, this is the meaning. Furthermore, one does not consider a small amount of virtue to be sufficient, but after hearing, one desires to contemplate, and after contemplating, one desires to meditate, from ground to ground, and from quality to quality, one accomplishes them, which is well entered. When meditating on quiescence and insight, when meditating constantly and meditating respectfully.

It is called 'perfectly connecting,' meaning that being combined with what was said above is my true aspiration, that is, I have done purification, accomplished as I thought, I have made it capable. Regarding meditating on the signs of calm abiding and insight, etc., at the appropriate time, if the mind becomes distracted by external objects such as form and sound, then meditate on the signs of calm abiding, thinking about the faults of samsara such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, and removing the mind from distraction is called meditating on the signs of calm abiding. If the mind becomes dull and萎靡, then meditate on the thought of insight, thinking about the qualities of the Tathagata, and the result of samadhi, the self-characteristics and general characteristics of all dharmas, in order to uplift the mind, which is called meditating on the signs of insight. If one abandons agitation and sinking, and the mind enters into equanimity, then meditate on the sign of equanimity, abiding in the immovability of the mind, which is called meditating on the sign of equanimity. If there are other tasks, do not be satisfied with smallness, etc., if there are roots of virtue to be accomplished, and others to be obtained, then one should not be satisfied with small virtue. For the sake of constantly entering with reverence, it is said that perfectly connecting, that is, diligently practicing calm abiding and insight, is called entering with reverence. It is not that one practices occasionally and does not practice occasionally, but that one practices at all times, which is the meaning of constantly entering. Born with joy, etc., these four verses show that the cause of having accumulated merit in previous lives becomes the cause of the five kinds of dharma. Why? Because of the cause of doing good in previous lives, one is happy to abide in a suitable environment and place in this life. Why? Because of the cause of doing good in previous lives, one abandons the eight unfree states and obtains leisure and endowment in this life, and when one obtains leisure and endowment, one can rely on a superior person. The cause of being without illness, and also the ability to generate the distinctions of samadhi, is also the accumulation of merit in the past. Why? Because of the cause of accumulating merit in previous lives, one is without illness in this life, and has samadhi, and good discernment, is
