It should be known. The teacher is called 'extremely clear' because he teaches the Dharma without concealment. The Tathagata does not teach only a part of the Dharma and not another part, but teaches all the Dharma; he does not only speak the words and not the meaning, but speaks both the words and the meaning together, therefore the teacher reveals without concealment, hence it is called 'extremely clear'. It is called 'joyful' because it makes those who have attained their own benefit rejoice. From the noble stream-enterer to the Arhat and below, the eight types of individuals, the bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis, and the Tathagatas are called those who have attained their own benefit. Why? Because the eight types of individuals, such as the stream-enterer, have also abandoned the nature of the afflictions of afflictions, the afflictions of karma, and the afflictions of life, and have directly realized Nirvana, therefore they are called those who have attained their own benefit. The bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis and the Tathagatas have also perfected the accumulation of merit and wisdom, and have obtained the complete benefit of themselves and others, therefore they are called those who have attained their own benefit. We see that the fruit is obtained from the teachings of the Tathagata, and thus joy arises, hence it is called 'joyful'. It is called 'manifest desire' because it makes those who have not attained their own benefit crave. Those who have not attained their own benefit, from ordinary beings up to and including the stage of practice of aspiration, those who have not attained the supreme Dharma of the world, are called those who have not attained their own benefit. In order to make them also attain their own benefit, and thus generate the desire to enter the teachings of the Tathagata, it is called 'manifest desire'. It is called 'all-knowing' because it truly teaches the inconceivable Dharma. The Dharmadhatu, non-conceptual wisdom, and the aspects of Bodhi, which are to be realized individually, are called the inconceivable Dharma. Because it truly teaches these Dharmas, it is called 'all-knowing'. Or, if thinking about certain Dharmas causes one to vomit blood and go mad, these Dharmas are called the inconceivable Dharma. What are they? They are the karmas that accomplish the various phenomena of external objects.

The land is not all-pervading, the sphere of meditative stabilization of yogis is inconceivable, the sphere of wisdom of the Thus-Gone One is inconceivable, and the power of medicine and mantras is inconceivable. Because these dharmas are truly taught, causing listeners to abandon those places, it is called "knowing all." Because of truly showing the dharma of thought, it is called "discriminating." Aggregates, elements, sources, grounds, and perfections are called the dharma of thought. Because these dharmas are taught without inversion, it is called "discriminating." Because it does not contradict valid cognition, it is called "reason." Because the speech does not contradict the three valid cognitions of direct perception, inference, and scripture, it is called "reason." Because of showing how to be reasonable in discipline, it is called "concordant." The Great Vehicle is not taught to those of the Hearer Vehicle, and the Hearer Vehicle is not taught to those of the Great Vehicle. What is not suitable for the vessel and the dharma is not taught, but whatever dharma is reasonable to teach to whatever sentient being, that dharma is taught to that sentient being. Because the dharma that is suitable for the vessel and the dharma is taught, it is called "concordant." Because it has a purpose, the fault of repetition is avoided. For the statement of various names such as ignorance, darkness, gloom, and delusion, it does not become the fault of repetition. Why? Because it has a purpose and has meaning. What is the purpose? In the assembly of many who gather in the wheel of dharma, in order for some to understand the various names of words, in order for everyone to understand what some understand, and in order to generate the seeds of correct wisdom in others individually. The necessity of various names should be understood as it appears in the treatises that can be extensively explained. In order to make all non-Buddhists afraid, it is like the power of a lion's roar. For example, just as the power of the sound of a lion's roar makes the small animals on the mountains afraid, similarly, the power of the Thus-Gone One and the sound of the voice proclaiming selflessness terrifies the non-Buddhists who are like the small animals on the mountains, therefore it is like the lion's roar.
