How is it appropriate to teach the Dharma that I have taught? That is, in accordance with the Vinaya, teach impurity to those with attachment, loving-kindness to those with hatred, and dependent origination to those with ignorance. Because the means of subduing afflictions must be in accordance with each individual's disposition, these words can enter their ears. How are the words that enter the ears appropriate? That is, without entanglement, not relying on gain, respect, and praise. "Without entanglement, not relying" means that the two are the same in meaning. Robes and begging bowls are called gain; prostrations and circumambulations are called respect; praising with words is called praise. Not relying on and being attached to these is called being without entanglement. "Appropriate is conforming, because appropriate does not cause aversion," which means that appropriate and conforming are the same in meaning. If one speaks many meaningless words, one will become incompatible with worldly people. If one becomes incompatible, it will cause aversion. Therefore, it is said, "Because appropriate does not cause aversion." Because worldly people are pleased by short explanations, aversion will not arise. Speaking briefly in accordance with worldly people is called appropriate. "Vast is inexhaustible," which means that vast and inexhaustible are the same in meaning. Even if one teaches the Dharma from the same seat at the end of a kalpa, the words of a Bodhisattva will not be exhausted. Being inexhaustible in this way is called vast. "Two verses with complete letters" means that after speaking of complete sentences, one speaks of complete letters. Letters are A and Ka, and so on. Because all the letters of a Bodhisattva have eight branches, they are called complete letters. That is, the meaning is expressed by two verses. What are the eight branches? Therefore, it is said: "By teaching and explanation, thus, in accordance with the vehicle, conforming and proclaiming, fame and how it is appropriate, arising and conforming." That is to say, the eight branches are teaching, explanation, thus, in accordance with the vehicle, conforming, gentle, fame, how it is appropriate, arising, and conforming.

pa'o. Therefore, teaching the Dharma is first to teach in brief, saying ten, five, or three, which is called "showing." Then, for the sake of that brief showing, explaining in detail and at length is called "explanation." Explaining the Hearer Vehicle to those tamed by the Hearer Vehicle, explaining the Solitary Buddha Vehicle to those tamed by the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, and explaining the Great Vehicle to those tamed by the Great Vehicle is called "congruent with the Vehicle." Words that are unpleasant, harmful to the ears, but not harmful to the mind, and explaining in a way that is pleasing to the ears and beneficial to the mind is called "gentle." Teaching words that are known in the world is called "renowned." For whatever is to be tamed, by what reasoning is what Dharma taught, then to that which is to be tamed, teaching that Dharma is called "as is reasonable." Showing the cause of arising from the three realms, which is the noble path, is called "arising." Teaching the Dharma that is in accordance with the eight limbs of the noble path is called "subsequent conformity." Those eight limbs of words should also be applied in sequence with the eight qualities of words explained in the Sutra. What is the eighth? It is having words and letters of reason, following, conforming, acknowledging, corresponding, conforming, and the perfection of words skillfully combined. These are applied in sequence, and should be understood as they are applied in the commentary. Showing with words and letters of reason without contradicting valid cognition is called "showing," and "reason" is words and letters, gathering the two into one meaning. Therefore, when the first Bodhisattva briefly summarizes the Dharmas into ten, five, or three and shows them, he briefly shows them with words and letters of reason without contradicting the three valid cognitions such as direct perception, therefore it is called "showing." Because it explains without contradicting the showing, it is called "having." Gathering explanation and having into one meaning, that is, first explaining briefly, then explaining that brief showing in detail later, and explaining in a way that the meaning of the previously brief showing and the later detailed explanation do not contradict each other, therefore it is called "having," that is, the previously brief showing and the later detailed
