Saying the two are also meaningless, is the meaning of this. In order to explain with other reasons how practicing is not meaningless. If merely hearing can reveal the meaning, then practicing becomes meaningless. Saying this, if merely hearing the Dharma can attain the Dharmakaya and attain the fruit, then practice would become meaningless, but it is not so, listening to the supreme Dharma from the Tathagata and Bodhisattvas, and virtuous friends, like that, practicing Samatha and Vipassana, one can then see the meaning, therefore practice is also not meaningless, is the meaning of this. Hearing is not meaningless, in order to supplement and explain this point. If even without hearing one can enter into practice, then explaining is also meaningless. Saying this, if even without hearing the Dharma one can enter into the practice of Samatha and Vipassana, then those who explain the Dharma would also become meaningless, but it is not so, because one must rely on the explanation and scriptural authority of virtuous friends to practice, so explaining is also not meaningless, is the meaning of this. Because it is obtained by relying on the Dharma that one has realized oneself, it means that the Dharmakaya and non-conceptual wisdom are also obtained through the power of practicing Samatha and Vipassana, through hearing, therefore the practice of yogis is not meaningless, is the meaning of this. In order to gather beings into one's own Dharma nature, etc., because explaining the Dharma of reason, sentient beings are placed in the teachings of the Tathagata, and can understand the meaning of the Dharma, if the Dharma is not explained, one cannot understand the Dharma, therefore explaining the Dharma of reason is also not meaningless, is the meaning of this. In the section called "Verses of Differentiated Explanation," the meaning and meaninglessness of explaining the Dharma are explained. If the way the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas explain the Dharma is distinguished, it is to explain in what way they explain the Dharma, therefore composing verses, is the meaning of this. What the supreme beings say is, arises from scriptural authority, realization, and perfection. Here, the supreme beings are Bodhisattvas. If we distinguish the ways these Bodhisattvas explain the Dharma, there are three ways of explaining the Dharma, and the differences in scriptural authority.
