When analyzing, one is oppressed by cold in cold times, and oppressed by heat in hot times. Sometimes one is oppressed by hunger, and sometimes one is oppressed by thirst, etc. Because one must seek through suffering that is harmful to body and life, it is called difficult to obtain. Such a difficult to obtain thing, once given away, will immediately perish and disappear, so it is called meaningless. If enjoyment is exhausted, one will suffer the pain of poverty, such as destitution and busyness. If one gives up the body, one will die, so it is called meaningless. Therefore, worldly people find it difficult to give up body and possessions, so they think it is not appropriate to give to other sentient beings, because it is difficult to obtain, and even if given away, it will not be exhausted, which is one way of giving. If giving also leads to exhaustion, it is thought that giving is not appropriate. Therefore, on the contrary, Bodhisattvas, with steadfast joy, constantly give generously to suffering beings in various ways. Thus it is said, the steadfast one is the Bodhisattva. Joyful mind refers to giving away body and possessions with a mind of love and self. Constant means not just giving once, but giving at all times until the end of samsara. Suffering beings refer to busy and impoverished beings. Various kinds of giving refer to giving away external objects such as wealth and grain. Extensive giving refers to giving away internal objects such as head and limbs. Benefiting beings in various ways, for the ultimate and conventional dharmas, and the self and common characteristics of each dharma, can benefit beings even when listening, can benefit beings even when thinking, and can benefit beings even when practicing, so it is called benefiting beings in various ways. Extensive refers to the Mahayana dharma such as land and paramitas. Difficult to obtain and not obtained means that it does not need to be accomplished with many difficulties, it means that it can be accomplished easily. Even if one gives completely, it will not decrease but will increase, what more needs to be said about the Dharma? For body and possessions are difficult to obtain, if given away, they will be exhausted, but they will not increase.

Ra gyi. If the excellent Dharma is given to others and taught, it will not decrease but only increase. For example, if many lamps are lit from one lamp, the first lamp does not diminish, and many other lamps also increase. Similarly, if the Dharma is taught, the wisdom of other sentient beings who hear it will increase, and the wisdom of the teacher will not diminish, so it is called an increase that does not diminish. Like this, bodhisattvas find it difficult to obtain bodies and possessions, and even if they give them away, they will disappear. However, they continuously, out of compassion, joyfully give to suffering sentient beings. Then, it is easy to seek the excellent Dharma, and even if it is given away, it will increase and not diminish. What need is there to mention giving to sentient beings? This is the meaning of "giving too much." Surpassing life and possessions, the Dharma is difficult to seek. Like this, even for just one verse, bodhisattvas completely give away their bodies. Therefore, in the sutras, it is said, "For the sake of a well-spoken verse, the Able One sought it with the value of his body." The Sutra of the Ten Grounds also says, "For the sake of the meaning of one word, I would gladly throw myself into a pit filled with embers." If that is the case, how can it be obtained without difficulty if it is obtained through great suffering? If someone asks this. To answer this question, the meaning is that things are not to be understood in this way. From the time the Buddha appeared in the world until the Dharma disappears, the Dharma is obtained when there is less difficulty. Why? Because the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, considering the differences of places and times, depart from the beings to be tamed, and even if they are unwilling, they will also teach the excellent Dharma. Regarding this, some people think that bodhisattvas are not stingy with the Dharma. Even if they have already taught the Dharma, since the true meaning of the Dharma is not within the scope of language, they have not spoken the true meaning. Therefore, the meaning of teaching the Dharma is meaningless. In order to explain that the Dharma is meaningful and meaningless, two verses are spoken, that is, the Dharma of the verses is neither meaningful nor meaningless, and is also a verse.
