A Bodhisattva is not only compassionate, but also relinquishes qualities such as miserliness, and this is compassion. To rejoice in beings who possess generosity, etc., means that joy arises when one sees beings happy, and this is called joy. Joy is when one rejoices upon seeing beings practice the six perfections, such as generosity. Furthermore, to be free from afflictions and to be fond of is called equanimity. The nature of equanimity is to be without attachment or hatred towards anything, and to pray that beings who possess enjoyment such as generosity, etc., or who are happy, may not develop attachment; and to think that beings who have been robbed of their enjoyments and have become miserable may not develop hatred, this is the meaning of equanimity. Unmade, disparagement, and shame, delight in doing and objects, non-discouragement and establishment, and the wisdom of speech. Furthermore, contemplating shame, contemplating joy, contemplating non-discouragement, contemplating establishment, and contemplating speech, through these contemplations, the element of perfection will also increase. Among them, that which has not been done at all, or has not been completed, is called unmade. To have acted perversely towards perfection is called disparagement. Thus, if one has not done it at all, or has not completed it, or has disparaged it, and feels ashamed and regretful, this is called contemplating shame. For the sake of beings, one should always practice the six perfections, and with a joyful mind, constantly focus on the six perfections such as generosity, and single-mindedly abide in them, without distracting the mind elsewhere, this is called contemplating joy. When engaging in the six perfections such as generosity, if a mind arises that does not want to practice, then one should generate the thought that this mind is an enemy because it obstructs the attainment of unsurpassed enlightenment, and to generate such a recognition is called contemplating non-discouragement. For the sake of beings,

Thinking that one will be saved by teaching the Dharma related to the six perfections, and inquiring and establishing the principles and scriptures of the six perfections, this is called establishing in mind. For example, in this very Ornament of the Sutras, the principles are established in terms of numbers, characteristics, order, and so on. Combining with the different capacities of sentient beings, whichever perfection is suitable to be taught to which sentient being, that perfection is taught to that sentient being, this is called speaking in mind. Starting from the Dharma of shame, it means that shame is the cause, or that it is under the control of shame. The so-called "not done" means that one has not done even a little of the six perfections from beginning to end. The so-called "not complete" means that there are three types of giving: material giving, fearlessness giving, and Dharma giving. One only does two of them, not all three. Or, one only gives a little material giving, not all of it; one only says words of fearlessness giving, but does not actually protect; one only teaches part of the Dharma giving, and does not teach the other part, concealing the teacher, this is called incomplete. The so-called "wrong conduct" means that one only speaks praises of giving, but does not give material things; one gives knives to butchers; one gives money to prostitutes; one steals and then gives, and one gives with deception and falsehood, this is called wrong giving. The so-called "shame" means that one feels pain in the heart because one has not done, has not done completely, and sees that one is being degraded, this is called shame. The so-called "entering" means that one abandons what one has not done and has not done completely because of shame, and enters into the state of doing and doing completely, this is its meaning. The so-called "for the sake of turning away" means that it is for the sake of turning away from degradation and wrong conduct, this is its meaning. The so-called "will not regret for long" means that even if regret arises, one should not continue to generate regret, this is its meaning. If one continues to feel regret, one will not be able to enter into virtue, therefore one should give, and so on.
