If one is not proficient in learning, one will not attain omniscience. Therefore, one should seek the abodes of knowledge. How many abodes of knowledge are there, and for what purpose are they sought? There are two aspects. There are also two aspects to the purpose for which they are sought: to seek in order to attain the wisdom of undifferentiated omniscience, and specifically, to subdue others, to take others under one's wing, and to seek for the sake of self-understanding. If one does not strive in these five abodes of knowledge, how can one attain the omniscience of the noble and supreme? The abodes of knowledge are five: inner science, logic, grammar, medicine, and the arts and crafts. Among these, proficiency in the twelve branches of the Buddha's teachings is called inner science. Proficiency in the treatises on logic, which are grasped by means of direct perception and inference, is called logic. Proficiency in the root text of grammar, the *Kārakalāpa*, is called grammar. Proficiency in the root texts of medicine, which cure diseases such as wind and bile, is called medicine. Proficiency in the root texts of song, dance, incense, and so forth, is called the arts and crafts. If bodhisattvas do not understand and contemplate these five abodes of knowledge through hearing, thinking, and so forth, how can they attain the wisdom of omniscience? Therefore, in order to attain the wisdom of undifferentiated omniscience, one should strive in the five abodes of knowledge. That is the meaning. Among these, the noble hearers and solitary realizers, and the supreme noble bodhisattvas, are the most excellent. Knowing all things as they are, completely and without error, is called omniscience. Thus, one strives in these fields in order to subdue others, to take them under one's wing, and for the sake of self-understanding. In particular, bodhisattvas should strive in logic and grammar. Why? Because they strive in order to subdue those non-Buddhists who boast of being proficient in the texts of logic and grammar. Bodhisattvas should also strive in medicine and the arts and crafts. Why?

As such, for those who wish to pacify the suffering caused by illness, and for those who wish to learn crafts and desire enjoyment, one strives to embrace and benefit them. A Bodhisattva strives in the inner science (adhyātmavidyā), why? In order to know without error what is the nature of the noble path itself. The term "those" refers to the meaning of those five sciences. The term "for what" means to explain for what result one strives in the five sciences. Seeking logic and grammar is to refute those who do not believe in them. A Bodhisattva seeks logic, in order to know without error the meaning of what is well said and what is poorly said, and to refute heretical outsiders by knowing the treatises of logic, and to generate faith in those who do not believe in this teaching, and to strive to ensure that those who have generated faith do not lose faith and that it increases. A Bodhisattva seeks grammar, in order to make other wise people believe in oneself through one's own mastery of Sanskrit (sam skri ta), and to refute outsiders who boast of being proficient in grammatical treatises, and to seek proficiency in the terminology of the Dharma, which teaches and explains many words determined for one meaning, this is its meaning. The science of medicine and the science of crafts are to accommodate those who desire them. A Bodhisattva seeks the science of medicine, why? In order to know diseases and the causes of diseases, and health and the methods of health, and to seek to pacify the various diseases of sentient beings. A Bodhisattva seeks the science of crafts, why? In order to accomplish enjoyment without much effort and without fatigue, and to be respected by the people of the world for having enjoyment and being proficient in crafts, and to seek to benefit the people of the world through the means of enjoyment. The inner science is for oneself to know.

Regarding actions, inner scholars seek Bodhisattvas. Why? Because they themselves know the noble path without any inversion, thereby abandoning afflictions, and knowing without inversion that what is done is not wasted and what is not done will not occur. Furthermore, they seek to extensively reveal it to others. Regarding seeking the expanded realm, there are three verses, which state that for the unsurpassed lineage, there is the lineage of attaining enlightenment, or the seed, or the lineage of the six perfections. The seed is called the realm. To show how those realms grow and flourish, it is shown with thirteen verses, which is the meaning. In order to fulfill the perfections, whatever mindfulness is endowed with the perfections, that itself becomes the expanded realm. Regarding how the realm of the perfections grows, in order to perfect the six perfections, if one were to contemplate like the mindfulness that arises separately, endowed with the six perfections, then by that alone, the realm and seed of the perfections would grow and flourish, which is the meaning. That is what these verses show. The mindfulness that causes the realm of the perfections to grow is also shown with thirteen verses, which is the meaning. Rejoicing from causes and conditions, remembering it in its place, desiring common fruits, and how to aspire to enlightenment. Regarding this, rejoicing from causes and conditions, contemplating, remembering it in its place, contemplating, desiring common fruits, contemplating, and how to aspire to enlightenment, contemplating. Thus, contemplating will cause the realm of the perfections to grow, which is the meaning. That is also from rejoicing in understanding the cause, contemplating, up to contemplating holding the self as supreme. Regarding this, the mindfulness that increases the realm of the perfections also starts from rejoicing in understanding the cause, contemplating. If one were to contemplate like the place where the arising of holding the self as supreme enters
