Because there is no other vehicle, the Buddha himself is named "Vehicle." Reaching the ultimate is the only exhaustive one, which is said to be the one Great Vehicle, that is its meaning. Therefore, one should understand the vehicle as one vehicle through this and that sutra and this and that intention. It is not right to say that there are no three vehicles. As mentioned above, although there are three vehicles, in the Lankavatara Sutra and other sutras, it is exhausted as one vehicle, saying that there are no three vehicles. Therefore, it should be understood that from one Dharma, considering this and that intention, it is said to be one vehicle. In the ultimate sense, it is not right to say that there are no three vehicles, that is its meaning. Why does the Buddha say one vehicle, considering this and that intention? Like this, although there are three vehicles, what is the meaning and intention of saying one vehicle, considering these seven kinds of intentions? Some are for guiding, and some are for gathering. For the uncertain, the Buddha taught the one vehicle. It means that considering the benefit of those with uncertain faculties, the Buddha said that the vehicle is one vehicle. Uncertain faculties refer to those with uncertain Shravaka faculties, those with uncertain Pratyekabuddha faculties, and those with uncertain Bodhisattva faculties. In order to place those with uncertain Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha faculties in the practice of the Great Vehicle and make them Buddhas, it is said to be one vehicle. Bodhisattvas with uncertain faculties, seeing beings in samsara who cause harm even when giving kindness, or beings who cause harm even without causing harm, or beings who cause harm for no reason, become weary of samsara and want to enter the Nirvana of the Shravakas. In order not to let them enter the Nirvana of the Shravakas, but to gather them, it is said to be one vehicle, that is its meaning. If it is said to be one vehicle, how can it guide and gather? Because it is said that the vehicle is the only exhaustive one, they will think like this: In the end, one can only attain Nirvana through the Great Vehicle, so why practice the Shravaka Vehicle first and then practice the Great Vehicle? Why practice two?

Since this is the case, one should enter the Great Vehicle from the very beginning, and one should think of practicing the Great Vehicle from the very beginning. Therefore, it is said that the Great Vehicle is one. Regarding the statement that the Śrāvaka lineage is uncertain, if the Śrāvaka lineage is uncertain, how can it become certain? The answer is that those are not true Śrāvakas; otherwise, their lineage is uncertain. Because they previously practiced the conduct of Śrāvakas, they are merely called Śrāvaka lineage. Similarly, the case of the Bodhisattva lineage being uncertain should also be viewed in the same way. Why? If those with uncertain Śrāvaka lineage were allowed to practice the conduct of the Great Vehicle from the very beginning, would the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas disregard the path of Bodhisattva conduct and adopt a laissez-faire attitude? The answer is that it is based on temporary certainty that a laissez-faire attitude is adopted, because those who have not previously practiced the conduct of Śrāvakas cannot be directly engaged in the conduct of the Great Vehicle. Therefore, it appears as if a laissez-faire attitude is adopted. Above, it was said that in order to guide those with uncertain Śrāvaka lineage, the One Vehicle is taught. In order to show that there is an internal and external aspect to those with uncertain Śrāvaka lineage entering the Great Vehicle, it is said: "Śrāvakas uncertain have two kinds, seeing and not seeing the meaning of the Vehicle." That is to say, there are two kinds of people with uncertain Śrāvaka lineage who enter the gate of the Great Vehicle and ultimately attain Buddhahood: those who see the meaning of the Vehicle and those who do not see the meaning of the Vehicle. Here, the term "Vehicle" refers to the Four Noble Truths, and seeing the Four Noble Truths is seeing the meaning of the Vehicle. What is that? It is the Stream-enterer, the Once-returner, and the Non-returner. Not seeing the meaning of the Vehicle is not seeing the Four Noble Truths, which refers to ordinary beings and those who follow faith. In order to show how many distinctions there are among those with uncertain Śrāvaka lineage who see the meaning of the Vehicle, it is said: "Seeing the meaning, free from desire and not free, these two are different." That is to say, there are also two kinds of people who see the meaning of the Vehicle: those who are free from desire for the desire realm and those who are not free from desire for the desire realm. Among them, those who are free from desire for the desire realm are those who are free from the desire
