Ordinary people universally speculate by considering permanence, happiness, self, and purity as self, or other, or form, or sound. Like grasping at permanence and so on, the nature of what is grasped is the characteristic of complete imputation. Since such a nature does not exist, it is called absence of inherent existence. Therefore, birth is without inherent existence, pacification is without inherent existence, abiding is without inherent existence, and just as what is grasped is without inherent existence, it is asserted that all phenomena are without inherent existence. This expresses that meaning. These three aspects of inherent existence should be understood as possessing the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena. That is to say, self is without substance, own-being is without substance, and not abiding in the substance of self; these three possess the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena. Now, self is without substance, showing that birth is without inherent existence; own-being is without substance, showing that cessation is without inherent existence; not abiding in the substance of self, showing that abiding is without inherent existence. This expresses that meaning. Just as there is grasping, because that is absent, it is absence of inherent existence; because that is absent, it is absence of inherent existence. That is to say, just as ordinary people speculate about purity and permanence and so on, because there is no inherent existence of happiness and purity, it is called absence of inherent existence. Here too, universally speculating about happiness and purity, the characteristic of complete imputation is non-existent, and that is called absence of inherent existence. In this way, after explaining the meaning of absence of substance, in order to explain the meaning of naturally passing beyond sorrow, it is said, "Accomplished by absence of inherent existence, relying on what is before, from the beginning without birth or cessation, peace and naturally passing beyond sorrow, phenomena." Because the phenomena have become without inherent existence, therefore there is no birth, and therefore naturally passing beyond sorrow is accomplished. How is that accomplished? It is that by relying on what is before, what is after is accomplished. Here, by relying on absence of inherent existence, absence of birth is accomplished. By relying on absence of birth, absence of cessation is accomplished. By relying on these two, initial peace is accomplished. Also by relying on initial peace, finally

Accomplishment. Regarding this, since there is no inherent existence, no entity as self, not abiding in the object of self, and not existing as clinging, therefore it is without inherent existence. Thus, the Dharma without inherent existence is like the sky, therefore there is no birth in it. Without birth, there is no destruction, therefore there is no cessation. Whatever Dharma is thoroughly examined for arising and ceasing, that itself is called originally peaceful. Thus, the noble ones are weary of the formations disturbed by arising and ceasing, and cut by sharp knives, but the noble ones rejoice in the realm of nectar that has abandoned arising and ceasing. Whatever Dharma is originally peaceful, that is also called self-nature Nirvana, which means it is called the perfectly established characteristic. This perfectly established characteristic is inherently existent by nature, not generated by cultivating the path, therefore it is called self-nature Nirvana. Starting from completely seeking the forbearance of the unborn Dharma, verses are composed, meaning: It is said in the Sutra Pitaka that forbearance of the unborn Dharma is obtained, in order to examine how the characteristic of obtaining forbearance of the unborn Dharma is, therefore verses are composed. The so-called "initial, that nature, other, self-nature, self, and transformation into otherness, all afflictions, differences, etc., are said to be forbearance in the unborn Dharma." Among them, for the eight unborn Dharmas, forbearance is called forbearance in the unborn Dharma. What are these eight? They are initial unborn, that nature unborn, other unborn, self-nature unborn, self unborn, transformation into otherness unborn, all afflictions unborn, and difference unborn. Initial is Samsara, to which it is said initial unborn. Some people think that Samsara has an initial, for those who think that Samsara has an initial, seeing that the initial of Samsara is unborn is called forbearance in the unborn Dharma. That is to say, Samsara is the twelve links such as ignorance mutually...
