They want to think so. According to the second statement of the Mind-Only school, the mind itself appears as afflictions such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance, and virtues, etc., which appear as arising from the mind, but they do not believe that there are things arising from the mind apart from the mind. This is its meaning. The mind itself appears in various ways, meaning that the Alaya itself appears in various ways, appearing as desire, appearing as ignorance, appearing as hatred, appearing as non-virtue, and appearing as unspecified dharmas. This is its meaning. The appearance of various kinds means that the mind itself simultaneously appears as faith, diligence, wisdom, and samadhi, etc., like samadhi. This is its meaning. The appearance of reality means that from the mind appearing as desire, etc., and appearing as faith, etc., it is only an appearance, so it is said to be the reality of mere appearance. Non-reality means that it is merely an appearance, but desire and faith, etc., have no self-nature, so it is said to be non-reality. Therefore, there is no dharma on it, meaning that like this, desire, etc., and faith, etc., are merely appearances, and there is no reality, so there is no self-nature of those dharmas on other independence, or it is said that it is merely an appearance, and even if it appears, there is no self-nature of dharma. This is its summary. There are eight verses to completely seek the self-nature, meaning that in order to examine what is the self-nature of conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, and the self-nature of contaminated and uncontaminated dharmas, it is explained by eight verses. In short, the self-nature of these dharmas is the signifier, the signified, and the interpretation. One verse is a brief explanation, and the rest is an explanation, meaning that in the eight verses, the first verse is a brief explanation of the self-nature of all dharmas. The remaining seven verses explain in detail the meaning of the brief explanation. This is its meaning. The distinction between the signifier and the signified, and the interpretation, is for the benefit of sentient beings that the Buddhas elaborately explain. It means that there are five symbols, namely form, mind, and mental factors.
