The path of understanding is ignorance itself. The term "afflictions" refers to desire, anger, pride, ignorance, views, and doubt, which are known as the six afflictions, or desire, anger, pride, ignorance, view of the aggregates as a self, clinging to extremes, wrong views, holding views as supreme, holding to discipline and vows as supreme, and doubt, which are known as the ten afflictions. Although only afflictions are mentioned here, it is implied that near afflictions such as anger and resentment are also included. Although ignorance is included within the six and ten afflictions, it is listed separately to show that it dominates all afflictions, because without delusion, afflictions do not arise, and afflictions arise from delusion. The phrase "conceptualization arises intensely" means that when conceptualizations of grasping and being grasped arise with regard to forms, sounds, and so on, ignorance, afflictions, and near afflictions arise simultaneously, which is called intense arising of conceptualization. The phrase "appearing as two from one's own realm" indicates conceptualization of the obscuration of knowledge. The phrase "ignorance and afflictions operate together" indicates conceptualization of the obscuration of afflictions. The phrase "the two entities are completely abandoned" means that although they appear as grasper and grasped, the two are actually completely abandoned, meaning that there is neither the nature of the grasped nor the nature of the grasper. Understanding this is the thorough search for the characteristics of pervasive affliction. The phrase "having obtained the distinction of the object" refers to what was previously explained as obtaining the object of dharma itself, which is called obtaining the distinction of the object. Specifically, from the stage of ordinary beings, starting from listening and contemplating, up to the highest stage of the land of adhimukti-caryā, knowing that all dharmas are born from the mind is called obtaining the distinction of the object, which is the definition of a person who has obtained the distinction of the object. The phrase "from one's own realm" indicates the activity of obtaining the first bhūmi, which indicates the nature and cause of the wisdom of conceptualization.
