Even if described with extensive words until the end of samsara, it would not be exhausted, but to show that if summarized briefly, these can be obtained, therefore, verses are composed, this is its meaning. The summarized meaning of this verse is to show where to have faith, by whom to have faith, in what way to have faith, and what is completely encompassed by the fruit of faith. Thus, "The Dharma of the Great Noble Ones, also surpasses." Among these, "Thus" means as it is said. Although Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are also noble ones, Bodhisattvas and Tathagatas are even more superior to them, therefore they are called "Great Noble Ones." Their Dharma refers to the Mahayana, and within the Mahayana, it is called "surpassing" because it possesses the bhumis and paramitas that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have. This shows where to have faith. "Those with intelligence" refers to Bodhisattvas, because they possess the wisdom of the union of skillful means and wisdom. This shows by whom to have faith. "Constantly increase great faith" means that Bodhisattvas, towards the Dharma of the Mahayana, with an uninterrupted and unyielding mind, greatly increase faith and confidence. This shows how to have faith. If one has faith in this way, one can obtain three kinds of fruits. Therefore it is said, "Vast merit always increases, with unequaled qualities, one becomes a great being." The three kinds of fruits mentioned are the increase of vast merit, the increase of itself, and becoming a Buddha. Among these, first, when faith and confidence arise towards the Dharma of the Mahayana, immeasurable merit will arise, therefore it is called the increase of vast merit. Afterwards, even in the stages below the ten bhumis before becoming a Buddha, one still increases faith and it becomes greater and greater, and the accumulation of merit will also greatly increase, therefore it is said that it is constantly increasing. Afterwards, at the time of the Buddha stage, because one obtains qualities that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have, such as the ten powers and four fearlessnesses, therefore, in order for oneself to be able to become a Buddha, without

Through these qualities, one becomes a great being. These words indicate that one is fully embraced by the fruit of devotion. The chapter on devotion is complete. Next, what is the connection between the chapter on seeking the Dharma? After the chapter on devotion has been explained, what is the connection to explaining the chapter on seeking the Dharma? It is not enough to merely have devotion to the Dharma of the Great Vehicle and to the Dharma of Bodhisattvas with abundant mindfulness; one must also seek the Dharma. Therefore, there is a connection between explaining the chapter on seeking the Dharma after the chapter on devotion. Furthermore, the object of focus should also be sought, in four verses. When seeking the Dharma, one should seek in three ways: seeking the object of focus, seeking the attainment of the object of focus, and seeking the mental engagement. Among these, with the wisdom of listening, the wisdom of contemplation, and the wisdom of meditation, one seeks the object of focus on which to focus, and this object is to be focused upon. Thus, the meaning is that four verses are composed to show that the object to be focused upon is sought with the three kinds of wisdom. Furthermore, the term "three baskets or even two baskets" means that the object to be focused upon with the three kinds of wisdom, if explained extensively, is the Dharma of the three baskets. The three baskets are the Sutra basket, the Vinaya basket, and the Abhidharma basket. If the object to be focused upon is shown briefly, it is the distinction between the Lesser Vehicle and the Supreme Vehicle, and the establishment of two baskets: the basket of the Hearers and the basket of the Bodhisattvas. Among these, the basket that is extremely extensive in the twelve branches of scripture and the basket of Jataka stories are called the basket of the Bodhisattvas. Most of the rest are the basket of the Hearers. The mention of "mostly" shows that among the rest, there are also Dharmas of the Great Vehicle and the Hearer Vehicle that are common. Why are these three and these two called baskets? It is because of their collection. Just as a container that can hold ten bre of grain and is a container for accumulation is called a container, so too in these three and these two, there are the meaning and words of the twelve branches of scripture.
